OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Health Feature
OpenAI, led by Sam Altman, has unveiled a new feature called ChatGPT Health, enabling users to securely connect their medical records and wellness apps to an AI chatbot.
This move represents a crucial step in the company’s ongoing effort to weave AI into healthcare services. With ChatGPT Health, users can manage health-related questions by integrating their personal health information, allowing the chatbot to generate more tailored responses based on their medical history.
However, OpenAI clarified that this feature is not designed to replace professional medical advice or serve as a diagnostic tool. Instead, it’s presented as a supplementary resource for addressing everyday health queries.
Fidji Simo, CEO of Applications at OpenAI, shared insights about the new feature on Substack, indicating that ChatGPT Health is part of a broader vision to transform ChatGPT into a versatile personal assistant, offering support across various life domains.
To facilitate the connection of users’ health data, OpenAI has partnered with b.well, a company that specializes in creating the technical infrastructure needed for sharing medical records with the ChatGPT Health platform.
Users will have the ability to connect multiple health and wellness tracking services such as Apple Health, MyFitnessPal, Weight Watchers, and Function, a startup focusing on lab testing. Additional data sources can be linked through the settings options in the Tools or Applications section.
OpenAI emphasized that the development of ChatGPT Health involved collaboration with medical professionals to ensure the feature meets appropriate guidelines, providing reliable and relevant information. This launch signifies an increased commitment from OpenAI to engage with healthcare, reflecting its strategic aim to explore AI applications in this sector.
Following the release of the GPT-5 model in August, Sam Altman remarked in an interview that healthcare could demonstrate the most significant advancements compared to other areas.
Earlier this year, OpenAI also introduced Health Bench, a benchmarking tool designed to evaluate AI performance in realistic healthcare situations. This tool aims to measure how effectively artificial intelligence can be applied in health-related contexts.
