OpenAI’s ChatGPT Is a Cheating Machine for Students

As ChatGPT and other generative AI tools grow in popularity, their impact on education is becoming increasingly evident, as students turn to these technologies for assignment assistance. One category of cheating-related conversations, “homework help,” emerged as one of the most common inquiries from consumers.

Business Insider Reports Since its launch in late 2022, ChatGPT has had a negative impact on the education world, providing easily accessible cheating tools to students. The Washington Postrevealed the most common uses for AI chatbots. The survey revealed that the second most common category of chatbot conversations (18%) was homework assistance. This finding confirms what many educators have suspected: students are increasingly relying on AI to complete their homework.

of The Wall Street Journal OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has reportedly developed a tool that can detect AI-generated text, with a 99.9% accuracy rate. The “watermarking” method would allow educators to distinguish between human-written and AI-generated content. However, OpenAI has not yet released the tool, citing concerns that it could harm non-native English speakers who use ChatGPT.

Interestingly, OpenAI’s research found that 69% of ChatGPT users believe that cheating detection technology leads to false accusations of AI use, and nearly 30% said they would use ChatGPT less if ChatGPT introduced watermarking and its rivals did not. This suggests that a large proportion of ChatGPT users are indeed using the tool for cheating, and the lack of watermarking may be encouraging this behavior.

Further evidence of ChatGPT’s popularity among students can be seen in social media comments. When OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was spotted driving a multi-million dollar Koenigsegg Regera, many TikTok users attributed his success to AI helping them with their classes. Additionally, ChatGPT usage was reported to have decreased over the summer holidays, suggesting student usage is a major factor in the tool’s popularity.
