On Tuesday in Minneapolis, anti-ICE protesters confronted federal agents during an immigration enforcement operation, heightening existing tensions in the area following the recent death of Renee Nicole Good. Video footage captured the chaotic scene, showing groups of demonstrators stepping in front of agents’ vehicles and attempting to block their path as law enforcement tried to navigate through the crowd.
To disperse the demonstrators, agents resorted to using tear gas and pepper spray. Amid the clamor, protesters could be heard chanting slogans against authoritarianism while also shouting obscenities and making noise with whistles and car horns—evidently trying to interrupt the operation and the directives from law enforcement.
A young man in the crowd, who was filming, shouted about their commitment to resist “fascists” in Minneapolis. Another individual stood defiantly in the road, hands raised, challenging the agents and later appeared to be cleaning pepper spray from his face.
In a separate instance, some protesters attempted to prevent federal agents from arresting a suspect, making it difficult for the officers to carry out their duties. Similar disruptive tactics were seen as agents dealt with another wave of shouting, whistle-blowing, and car horn honking. The night before, authorities had already resorted to firing tear gas and rubber bullets after fireworks were used against them outside a federal building.
As reported, over 2,000 arrests have occurred in Minnesota since December, a significant portion attributed to ICE’s largest enforcement operation in the state. Recently, ICE shared a list detailing serious criminal charges against some individuals arrested during this surge, including convictions for murder and sexual assault.
In light of these events, the cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, along with the state of Minnesota, have initiated legal action aimed at curbing the intensified federal immigration enforcement in the Twin Cities.
