A Eugene, Oregon, man pleaded guilty Tuesday to three hate crimes in federal court for defacing a synagogue in his hometown multiple times, according to the Department of Justice (DOJ).
The Department of Justice said in a press release that 34-year-old Adam Edward Brown was charged with two counts of intentionally defacing a synagogue and two counts of intentionally attempting to damage a synagogue solely because it is a place of Jewish worship. announced that he had pleaded guilty to one charge.
Brown intentionally targeted Temple Beth Israel in Eugene twice with anti-Semitic graffiti, according to court documents and statements made in court.
In one incident, Brown targeted a synagogue between September 10 and 11, spray-painting the number “1377'' on the outside of the building, the Justice Department said.

He admitted he chose the number because of its similarity to the white supremacist slogan “1488,” which references Adolf Hitler and the “14 words.”
And in January, Brown tried to damage the synagogue's glass door using a ball peen hammer. But when Brown realized he was being recorded by surveillance cameras, he stopped, moved to another area of the property and spray-painted “WHITE POWER” in large letters, the Justice Department said.

Eugene Police, with assistance from the FBI, executed a state search warrant on the Blouin residence on January 31, 2024.
During the search, investigators discovered multiple pieces of evidence linking Brown to the crime at Temple Beth Israel. Investigators also found several items consistent with anti-Semitic beliefs and practices.
Brown was eventually arrested by the FBI on March 7.

He pleaded guilty Tuesday, but has not yet been sentenced.
Brown now faces up to a year in prison, fines and restitution on each of the three charges.
