Oregon Officer Shot During Domestic Disturbance
An officer in Oregon was shot multiple times on Sunday while responding to a domestic disturbance that led to several fatalities, according to authorities.
Officers from the Sandy Police Department and Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the 39000 block of Evans Street in Sandy, approximately 30 miles east of Portland, around 4 p.m. after reports of a domestic issue and gunfire.
Upon arrival, gunfire broke out, and unfortunately, one officer sustained multiple wounds.
The injured officer was transported via Life Flight to a hospital and is anticipated to survive, said the Sandy Police Department.
“We are very grateful to be able to say that the officer is in stable condition and is expected to survive,” shared Sandy Police Chief Patrick Huskey during a brief news conference. “However, multiple victims are deceased at this time.”
Authorities have yet to disclose the exact number of victims or the circumstances surrounding their deaths.
The suspect had barricaded himself in the residence, resulting in a significant response from various law enforcement agencies and a shelter-in-place directive issued for residents nearby.
Eventually, just before 8 p.m., the suspect surrendered without incident and was taken into custody, according to police.
The situation is being treated as a homicide investigation, as stated by the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office.
“Our thoughts are with the recovering officer, the homicide victim, his family, and the entire Sandy community,” the Sheriff’s Office remarked in a statement. “We also extend our gratitude to the first responders who encountered significant danger on Sunday.”
After the suspect’s arrest, the shelter-in-place order was lifted and authorities confirmed there was no ongoing threat to the community.
Sandy Mayor Kathleen Walker referred to the incident as an “unimaginable loss of life,” urging residents to support the families of the victims and the first responders involved.
“This tragedy extends far beyond the neighborhood where the incident occurred, touching the families and friends of those affected, as well as the witnesses who experienced the shooting and its aftermath,” Walker added.
The Sandy police stated that they currently have no additional information. Meanwhile, requests for comments from the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office and the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office went unanswered.
