Oregon Parents and Teachers Form Neighborhood Group to Monitor ICE Activities
In Oregon, a collective of parents and educators has established a neighborhood group focused on tracking the activities of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The group claims their initiative serves to alert undocumented immigrants about the presence of federal agents nearby.
According to a report from Oregon Public Broadcasting (OPB), the ICE Oversight Group was created in October. Members are said to be stationed in different neighborhoods—often close to schools—keeping watch for any ICE agents that might be in the area.
When they spot an agent, participants communicate through a text chain or by using a whistle to alert others in the community. This action coincides with President Donald Trump’s intensified efforts to enforce immigration laws across the country.
“We want to be visible and present in order to show that we support our community. Our students should learn without fear, and we stand for that,” remarked teacher Andy Bunting in an interview with OPB.
Portland’s Response to Federal Actions
Portland is among several cities led by Democratic leadership facing significant community resistance to the Trump administration’s aggressive immigration policies. Similar watch groups have emerged in various locations, including California.
On Instagram, accounts like @pdxicewatch—boasting about 23,000 followers—are actively organizing these anti-ICE efforts. This account monitors ICE operations and regularly shares updates regarding their activities. They even maintain a public database cataloging vehicle details and sighting locations associated with ICE.
One post from November specifically addresses ways to intervene during ICE operations near schools, noting that “ICF often targets seemingly quiet areas to apprehend individuals.” Another observation highlights concerns about communication barriers within schools, mentioning that staff and administrators may not always connect effectively with teachers from diverse backgrounds.
ICE Justifies Its Presence
ICE defended its presence near educational institutions, stating to OPB that their actions aim to safeguard schools from being misused as havens by individuals with criminal backgrounds. They emphasized that law enforcement actions are now subject to greater oversight than before.
Recent incidents have further fueled tensions, with Portland Mayor Keith Wilson and other leaders accusing ICE of using harmful methods during arrests, like deploying pepper balls. They declared these actions incompatible with the values of Portland.
“We strongly condemn ICE’s aggressive and unwarranted behaviors, which pose a threat to public trust in government,” they said in a collective statement. Earlier protests against deportation have led to frequent demonstrations outside ICE facilities in Portland.
