Senator Ron Wyden’s mother’s aide has been accused in a lawsuit of tormenting his family, eventually leading to his suicide, according to court documents.
Brandon O’Brien, aged 35, was employed by Nancy Bass Wyden—the wife of the famous owner of the Strand Bookstore in Manhattan—from June 2022 until September 2024. His responsibilities often included caring for the couple’s young children, which included tasks like school runs and trips to Disney World.
The disturbing behavior reportedly started in September 2022. During a school drop-off, O’Brien allegedly made inappropriate sexual comments to the couple’s 10-year-old daughter.
Despite the accusations, it is claimed that the mother did not address O’Brien’s conduct.
Additionally, the couple’s teenage son accused O’Brien of using homophobic slurs and making threats, stating that his soccer teammates would “rape” him, as noted in Manhattan Supreme Court documents.
There were incidents of O’Brien being pelted with objects by the boy, according to the lawsuit.
Some alleged abusive interactions took place at Disney while Martezos, the widow, observed, according to her claims.
Bass Wyden’s legal team attempted to dismiss the allegations, labeling the lawsuit as “unfounded” and claiming it was a distraction from O’Brien’s alleged misconduct, which includes documented theft from previous employers.
When O’Brien ceased working for them on September 30, 2024, Bass Wyden filed an NYPD report the following day, accusing O’Brien of theft involving $650,000 through credit cards and other means.
She also claimed to have hired a private investigator to look into O’Brien’s personal and professional life. By January, rumors had begun to circulate about O’Brien among business contacts, which contributed to his distress.
Tragically, O’Brien took his own life on May 26.
Martezos publicly mourned her husband, writing online about her “heartbroken” state following his death.
After his suicide, authorities dropped the theft allegations, and Martezos’ lawyers asserted that those claims were false.
The charges against Bass Wyden were described as “shocking, intrusive, and cruel,” emphasizing the severity of workplace harassment.
Ron Wyden, 76, has served as a senator since 1996 and is also a father of five. He has faced criticism from progressive Democrats regarding various issues over the years.
He and Bass Wyden married in 2005 and have three children together, in addition to two from his previous marriage.
They are known to own a home in Portland, and Bass Wyden frequently travels to New York, where she remains involved in her family’s longstanding business.
In a notable public statement, Wyden’s son Adam criticized him regarding the Biden administration’s tax plans, expressing frustration over perceived negligence towards American citizens’ aspirations.
