(News Nation) — Bill O'Reilly thinks former President Trump should ask Vice President Harris to co-sign a letter to the American people in the wake of the second assassination attempt on the Republican presidential nominee.
O'Reilly said that if he were in charge of Trump's campaign, he would have Trump release a statement urging Harris to sign a “put down the hate” message.
“Harris would have to do that, but it's Trump who's pushing for it,” he told NewsNation reporter Leland Bitart on Monday. “If he does that, he'll win.”
The call for unity came a day after the second assassination attempt on Trump in recent months. The former president was shot during a rally in rural Pennsylvania in July.
O'Reilly believes Trump should use the incident as an opportunity to renew his campaign, with Harris currently leading slightly in the polls.
The author and longtime conservative commentator said that for Trump to win, he needs to do more to convince Americans that the former president is serving the country, not himself.
“With Trump, it's all front and center. He has to be careful,” O'Reilly said.
O'Reilly believes above all else, Trump should focus on issues like border security and avoid hateful rhetoric.
“If he gets obsessed with eating his cocker spaniel or says, 'I hate Taylor Swift,' he's going to hurt himself,” O'Reilly said.
In a statement posted Social Media Platform X Harris said Sunday she was glad Trump was safe, adding:Violence has no place in America.”
