On Tuesday, a Mexican Christmas fair organizer was shot dead outside a church during Christmas Eve festivities.
Martín Ramírez Ruiz, the director of a Christmas fair in Chilpancingo, the capital of Guerrero state, was killed along with another man in a targeted attack, according to the Associated Press.
According to AFP news agency, the attackers opened fire on the local mayor as he took part in a seasonal dance.
Local authorities said one other man was killed and a third injured in the attack.
The investigation into the attack is still ongoing and no arrests have been made.
The Chilpancingo Christmas Fair is a major local event in the southern state of Mexico, drawing thousands of revelers to the streets of this city, founded in 1591.
Governor Evelyn Salgado said on social media that the violent killing was “an unacceptable act that will not go unpunished.”
Authorities have not announced a motive, but the Associated Press says extortion and associated violence are common among Mexico's most powerful gangs.
Two rival drug gangs are currently engaged in a turf war in Chilpancingo, with Tracos and Ardiros facing off in the streets, causing both high-profile and low-profile deaths.
Back in October, Mayor Alejandro Arcos was murdered by a gang on his sixth day in office.
Arcos' headless body was found inside a pickup truck, with his severed head propped up on the roof of the car.
