Baseball’s Human Element Shines in Controversial Call
Replay systems and automatic ball-and-strike systems might be welcomed by some players and managers, yet the human element of baseball remains undeniably significant. This was evident in a recent game involving the Toronto Blue Jays and the Baltimore Orioles, two champions of the American League East.
The Blue Jays and their second baseman Ernie Clement seemed to benefit from this human touch during the bottom of the sixth inning on Sunday.
During the game, Blue Jays catcher Brandon Valenzuela hit a ground ball to Orioles shortstop Gunnar Henderson. Clement, anticipating an out call due to interference, instinctively veered to his right to avoid a tag from Henderson as he ran to first base. However, second base umpire Nick Lentz ruled that Clement was safe, asserting that he wasn’t dodging a tag but actually interfering with Henderson’s play.
Lentz explained, “The runner has the right to establish a basepath. Clement was heading toward second base and his line was already established.” He suggested that even if Henderson had attempted a tag, Clement’s established path meant he was in the clear.
Henderson expressed his frustration with the ruling, stating it didn’t feel right, while Orioles manager Craig Albanaz argued vehemently, claiming that Henderson wasn’t attempting the tag with enough effort.
Albanaz remarked, “I think sticking out your glove to tag someone counts as an attempted tag. There aren’t any explicit rules on how far you need to reach.”
Similarly, Hunter Wendelstedt, another umpire, commented that Clement’s action to move out of the way was commendable, as it allowed for a fair play at first base.
Despite facing a 4-2 deficit with two outs, the Blue Jays managed to rally back. Orioles pitcher Shane Baz faced difficulties in closing out the inning, allowing five runs (one earned) while expressing his frustration with the umpires on his way to the dugout. “We’re not discussing that call because it would lead to a fine,” he said post-game, hinting at the contentious nature of the call and its impact on the game.
Ultimately, the Blue Jays secured a 6-4 victory, showcasing not only their skill but also highlighting the unpredictable and often contentious nature of baseball.
