Orlando Bloom Opens Up About Dramatic Weight Loss for Film Role

Orlando Bloom recently shared that he struggled with his identity while losing a significant amount of weight for his role in the upcoming movie, *The Cut*. The 48-year-old actor shed 52 pounds to portray a boxer who returns from retirement to chase one last championship title. He described this process as leading him to become “obsessed” with weight loss.

During an appearance on the British talk show *This Morning*, Bloom discussed the intense physical and mental toll of the regimen he followed to achieve such a drastic transformation. “I was physically and mentally exhausted. I was struggling,” he reflected. “I was a scary person around me. Delusions, intrusive thoughts.” It seems that losing this much weight was quite a harrowing experience for him, almost to the point where he felt he might “die” from the effort.

He didn’t hold back on the realities of this challenge, advising viewers, “I don’t recommend doing it at home. That’s not something to take lightly.” Bloom worked closely with nutritionist Philip Goglia, who previously helped Christian Bale with his physical changes for *Batman Begins*. As Bloom explained, Goglia reduced his daily food intake progressively from three meals to just one, all while monitoring his blood levels. “I really struggled to give up my foam nutrition protein powder,” he admitted, detailing how his meals eventually boiled down to just tuna and cucumbers for the last three weeks.

Filming for *The Cut* was done in reverse order, so Bloom found himself at his lowest weight during the final scenes. “I had no energy or brain power,” he remarked. The simplicity of his diet underscored the drastic measures he was taking. Yet, despite the extreme sacrifices he made, Bloom expressed a certain admiration for his character’s motivations. He noted, “We’re supposed to eat, sleep and take care of ourselves,” suggesting that the character’s journey speaks to the lengths people will go for their goals.

Bloom shared that pushing through his fatigue pushed him to extremes, often lying between takes to recharge. His dedication was palpable; he recalled feeling the need to perform despite his state. At one point, he humorously reflected on how he wouldn’t skip his push-ups during breaks.

This journey, although marked by unhealthy methods, gave Bloom a unique opportunity to delve deeply into his character’s psyche. “I’ve always wanted to go for something big,” he said, noting that the role allowed him to connect intensely with what audiences would see on screen. His transformation even had a profound effect on his former partner, Katy Perry, who reportedly cried upon watching the film. “She was really touched. She knew what it did,” Bloom shared, recalling her reaction at the global premiere.

The actor, who shares a daughter named Daisy with Perry, candidly expressed his emotional response to the film, shedding tears during its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. Bloom’s commitment to his craft showcases not just physical endurance, but an emotional depth that surely resonates with audiences.
