The 2026 Oscars are currently on high alert following an FBI warning about a potential “surprise attack” from Iran.
This year’s Oscar ceremony is set to happen in Los Angeles this Sunday, with many Hollywood stars expected to attend, such as Timothée Chalamet, Rose Byrne, Kate Hudson, Brad Pitt, and Nicole Kidman.
As reported by ABC News, the FBI has alerted law enforcement across California about the possibility that Iran might retaliate against U.S. military actions by launching drones towards the West Coast.
“Our goal is to ensure that everyone feels safe, welcomed, and protected,” said Raj Kapoor, the Oscar telecast producer. He emphasized the production team’s responsibility in this regard.
Kapoor also mentioned, “We have the full support of the FBI and the LAPD, and we collaborate closely with them. This show needs to go smoothly, but we want everyone—those attending, watching, and fans outside—to enjoy it.”
The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department, in a statement to Hollywood Reporter, noted that they are “on heightened alert” for various threats, including individuals acting alone and potential “sleeper cells.”
“Considering the current global situation, we maintain a high level of readiness and vigilance to protect the residents of Los Angeles County,” the department added. They are working alongside federal and local law enforcement to share intelligence and assess the impacts of ongoing Middle Eastern conflicts on local communities.
“Public safety is our utmost priority. Our preparedness includes monitoring various threats, including solo attacks and cyber-related risks,” they explained.
According to Variety, security at the event has indeed been increased, but the changes aren’t particularly conspicuous.
On February 28, the U.S. and Israel conducted a joint military operation against Iran, culminating in the assassination of its leader, Ayatollah Khamenei. In retaliation, Iran targeted U.S. and Israeli locations across the Middle East, which led to the closure of airspace in the Gulf region.
These military actions have resulted in civilian casualties, the destruction of homes and infrastructure, and widespread unrest in the Gulf and beyond.
On a lighter note, the film “Sinners” has garnered an impressive 16 nominations, claiming the title of most-nominated film in Oscar history.
