Rep. Suozzi Discusses Proposal to End DHS Shutdown
During a recent appearance on NewsNation’s “Cuomo”, Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-N.Y.) talked about his plan, which he developed with Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-Pa.), aimed at resolving the shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security and the House of Representatives. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) expressed his discontent with the proposal, suggesting that the shutdown aligns with what his party’s base desires. He remarked, “There’s no doubt Brian’s base supports this.”
Host Chris Cuomo noted, “Well, Tom, I’ve heard that Hakeem Jeffries and others aren’t too pleased with your approach. They believe this shutdown reflects strong resistance that party members are calling for.”
In response, Suozzi acknowledged the division, saying, “Definitely, Brian’s party has distinct goals, and mine does too. But people are growing weary of this. Even those who aren’t directly affected, like travelers at airports, witness the long lines and get frustrated. It’s become a back-and-forth blame game, and honestly, it’s hard to know who to trust anymore. One minute you see one perspective on this show, another on cable news, and yet another on your TikTok feed. It’s leaving many feeling disenchanted with our system. We need to find a path forward, though it’s likely to ruffle some feathers. My party is counting on me, and we’re genuinely trying. This situation can’t just focus on party lines. For democracy to thrive, public involvement is essential. Yet, this can be challenging for people who are juggling work, family, and bills. They may look at the system and think everything is broken or rigged. We can’t keep pushing things like this; we need to strive for a functioning system again. It’s tough, but it’s important.”
