A group was filmed pelting New York City police officers with snowballs in Washington Square Park on Monday afternoon, leading to injuries among several officers, according to reports.
Police responded to a call around 4 p.m. about a large crowd on the park’s roof.
Officials mentioned that upon arrival, officers were struck with snowballs, resulting in some needing hospital treatment for facial cuts.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch acknowledged the viral video, stating that the actions depicted were “shameful and criminal.”
She also noted that detectives are looking into the incident.
The New York City Police Benevolent Association condemned the actions as “unacceptable and outrageous.”
The organization further remarked, “This is the environment New York City police officers face. Even as one officer receives treatment for their injuries, this cannot simply end here. Those involved need to be identified, arrested, and charged for assaulting a police officer. We expect our city leaders to vocally denounce this abhorrent behavior.”
Scott Munro, who leads the NYPD Criminal Fund Association, urged Mayor Zoran Mamdani and Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg to ensure that the perpetrators face prosecution.
Munro added that there should not be a free pass for those involved, noting that detectives are adept at identifying suspects and making arrests. He emphasized that police officers deserve safety, protection, and respect.
