Over 100 employees have been laid off from the National Institute of Renewable Energy, a spokesperson confirmed on Tuesday.
The representative mentioned that the layoffs were linked to “suspension of federal agencies, new federal directives, and labor orders resulting from budget adjustments.”
“Consequently, the NREL had to reduce its workforce, affecting 114 individuals across various roles in research and operations,” they added.
However, details regarding the specific directives were not provided. As of 2023, the National Renewable Energy Lab had nearly 3,700 staff members.
The lab operates campuses in Colorado, Alaska, and Washington, D.C. The cuts occurred amid broader staffing reductions by the Trump administration, which showed a distinct bias against renewable energy initiatives.
Even during his final term, Republicans promoted an “all of the above” energy strategy but aimed to halt or limit the approval of wind projects, effectively excluding renewables from the energy emergency declaration associated with the Trump administration.
