More than 1,000 anti-Israel demonstrators, their faces covered in flags and keffiyeh, march through Manhattan toward the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The star-studded Met Gala is in full swing there.
A still-growing crowd marched north on Fifth Avenue and barricaded the main thoroughfare at 79th Street, blocking traffic before police warned of possible arrests.
The march started at Hunter College, where the group “Within Our Lifetime” formed the “Day of Rage” protest and called for a march to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Despite targeting the glitzy event, which had long been expected to be a target for demonstrations, police managed to direct crowds into Central Park before blocking the exits, where they were held back. I am left confused as to how to proceed.
“At this point, this is a futile exercise. They have nowhere to go,” an officer was heard saying to his partner as he tried to corral the crowd.
As the march began, a large number of pro-Israel demonstrators joined the rally, claiming they were there to confront people for “supporting terrorism.”
“All these people are ignorant, uneducated, and blindly follow each other. It feels like we’re back in World War II,” said Elena Bakhchi, a Jewish Upper East Sider. (17) said.
