Over 450 Jewish Hollywood Professionals Sign Letter Denouncing Jonathan Glazer’s ‘Refute Their Jewishness’ Oscar Speech

More than 450 Jewish Hollywood professionals, including Steven Spielberg’s sister and other producers, signed an open letter condemning the following: zone of interest Director Jonathan Glaser won the award for his Oscar speech in which he denied his “Jewishness” and criticized Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza.

“All of our choices have been made to reflect and confront who we are now. It’s not about looking at what they did then, but rather what we’re doing now. Look at it,” he said at the time. “Our film shows where dehumanization reaches its worst. It has shaped everything about our past and present.”

Glaser went on to say that he and his fellow filmmakers “stand here as deniers of Jewishness and the holocaust, which was hijacked by the occupation, which led to the conflict of so many innocent people.” We are connected,” he said.

But Glazer took time to remember the Israeli victims of Hamas’ October 7 massacre.

“Whether it’s the victims of Israel’s Oct. 7 or the victims of the ongoing attack on Gaza. All the victims of this dehumanization. How do we resist?” he said.

Since that speech, various Jewish organizations and Hollywood experts, including Glazer’s own producers, have condemned his words. On Monday, the attacks on Glazer continued, with Debra Messing, Michael Rapaport, Eli Roth, Rod Lurie, Lawrence Bender, Amy Pascal, Nancy Spielberg, Jennifer Jason Leigh and many others signing on. An open letter has been published.

“We believe that our Jewishness has been hijacked to draw moral equivalence between the Nazi regime, which seeks to exterminate a race, and the State of Israel, which seeks to avoid its own annihilation. “We object to this,” the letter states.

The letter called the deaths of civilians in Gaza “tragic” but reiterated that Israel is waging a war of self-defense and is not targeting civilians.

“Every civilian death in Gaza is tragic. Israel is not targeting civilians. It is targeting Hamas. The moment Hamas releases the hostages and surrenders, this is the moment this heartbreaking war ends. “This has been true since the October 7 Hamas attack.”

“Using words like ‘occupation’ to describe indigenous Jewish people defending a homeland recognized by the United Nations as a nation dating back thousands of years is a distortion of history.”

The letter concluded that Glaser’s words lend further credence to “a modern-day blood libel fueling growing anti-Semitic hatred around the world, in the United States, and in Hollywood.”

“The current climate of growing anti-Semitism underscores the need for a Jewish state, Israel, a place that will always embrace us, just as no nation did during the Holocaust depicted in Glaser’s film. “I’m just emphasizing it,” he concluded.
