While no specific timeline for these closures has been disclosed, local officials in affected areas have received advance notifications about the store shutdowns. For instance, in Bakersfield, California, two stores were scheduled to close by July 1, impacting a significant number of customers.
The closures come as Rite Aid sold nearly all of its 1,240 stores amid bankruptcy proceedings. Currently, only 1,207 locations remain active on the Rite Aid website. Several pharmacies across various states have already been shut down since early May, indicating a broader trend.
Interestingly, some competing pharmacy chains may step in to occupy these vacant spaces. In a bid from May, CVS agreed to take over 64 Rite Aid locations in Idaho, Oregon, and Washington, with the deal pending final approval. Meanwhile, Walgreens has struck a deal to acquire prescription files from various Rite Aid pharmacies.
Rite Aid has noted that stores will continue to assist customers in transferring their prescriptions to other pharmacies, showing a willingness to aid in the transition during this tumultuous period.
