Texas House Democrats Leave State to Block Redistricting Votes
More than four members of the Texas House of Representatives have left the state, effectively preventing their Republican counterparts from voting on newly drawn Congressional district maps.
Among those who fled are lawmakers John Butch III, Anne Johnson, Letta Bauers, Rafael Ancha, James Tallarico, Ramon Romero Jr., Sleman Lalani, and Miherapresa. Reports suggest that over 50 Democrats have sought refuge in Illinois or New York to stop Texas representatives from reaching the necessary quorum for voting on the redistricting plan.
In a video shared on X, Bucy outlined his reasons for joining the quorum break, stating it was to thwart Donald Trump from manipulating the electoral process. He expressed his discontent with Trump’s impact on the country, asserting he was in Chicago for discussions about Texans’ rights.
Bucy claimed, “Mr. Trump and Governor Abbott are trying to manipulate the Texas legislative map to secure a GOP advantage in Congress. I refuse to stand idly by while our democracy is under threat.” He criticized the focus on gerrymandering rather than addressing pressing issues facing the state.
Johnson echoed this sentiment, remarking, “By breaking this quorum, the responsibility now lies with Governor Abbott. Are you going to prioritize the people of Texas, or will it be all about serving President Trump?”
During a press conference in Chicago, Romero described their actions as a strong stand against potential repercussions, stating, “Some say we’ve fled, but we’re here for a purpose.” He acknowledged the threat of fines or arrests, framing it as a price worth paying for upholding democratic values.
Lalani expressed frustration over the lack of focus on urgent issues such as flood relief, instead of discussing gerrymandered district changes. He argued that such alterations dilute representation for minority communities and divert attention from essential recovery efforts.
Governor Greg Abbott has responded by ordering the arrest of those House Democrats who have not returned to the Capitol, claiming they have abandoned their duties. Abbott accused them of holding critical legislation hostage, which would aid flood victims and property tax relief efforts.
Abbott stated, “The Texas House Democrats have abandoned their obligations to Texans. Their absence jeopardizes key laws intended to benefit those affected by flooding.”
Senator John Cornyn has also taken action, addressing the FBI to assist local law enforcement in locating and arresting the absent Democrats. Meanwhile, Attorney General Ken Paxton argued that these lawmakers’ failure to respond to legislative calls is neglect of their official responsibilities.
In a more confrontational move, Abbott filed a lawsuit in the Texas Supreme Court aiming to remove Senator Gene Wu, dubbing him the “mastermind” behind the Democrats’ decision to remain out of state. Wu defended his actions, asserting he remains committed to serving his constituents and criticized Abbott’s approach as punitive.
He remarked, “I am dedicated to fighting for what’s right, regardless of the consequences. My loyalty to the people of Texas cannot be broken.”
