FBI Director Kash Patel mentioned recently that the agency uncovered an intelligence report from August 2020 that includes some “surprising allegations.” These allegations relate to what seems to be a conspiracy by the Chinese Communist Party to meddle in the presidential election, favoring then-candidate Joe Biden.
If these claims had been made public at the time, they would have raised serious concerns about voter fraud and interference from foreign entities. Yet, officials, Democrats, and liberal media essentially dismissed the claims as “unfounded” or “ridiculous.” This response was not unexpected given the political climate.
It appears that parts of the intelligence community may have shielded these allegations regarding foreign election interference. Recently, Patel stated that the former FBI leadership misled the public about China’s interference in the 2020 election for their political advantage.
In another message, Patel emphasized the importance of restoring trust through transparency, rather than political motivations.
Mike Howell, Chairman of the Surveillance Project, submitted a criminal referral to the Department of Justice concerning former FBI Director Christopher Wray. This referral not only alleges Wray’s potential role in concealing this information but also cites false or misleading statements made to Congress regarding an FBI memo that targeted traditional Catholics.
Covering Up Election Interference
The referral to Patel’s office indicated that Wray may have breached Federal Law by providing false testimony to Congress about known voter fraud activities. For instance, during a Senate committee hearing on September 24, 2020, Wray asserted that the FBI “had not historically seen coordinated national voting fraud efforts.” Similarly, in March 2021, he told the Senate Judiciary Committee that “while the FBI isn’t unaware of widespread evidence of voter fraud, it wouldn’t have swayed the presidential election.”
Inconsistencies in Wray’s statements are troubling, especially when contrasted with the FBI’s own knowledge of the Chinese Communist Party’s efforts to influence the election on Biden’s behalf.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection announced on July 27, 2020, that numerous shipments containing fraudulent documents—specifically 19,888 counterfeit U.S. driver’s licenses—were seized. Many of these shipments were traced back to China and Hong Kong, while some came from the UK and South Korea. It’s believed that the majority of these fake IDs were aimed at university students in various states.
The August 2020 FBI intelligence report may shed light on why there was such a surge in counterfeit IDs, suggesting that the Chinese regime was manufacturing fake American driver’s licenses to facilitate identity creation for alleged Chinese voters, thereby enabling them to cast fraudulent mail-in ballots.
Patel asserted that these claims in the intelligence report were not disclosed to the public and were thus missed opportunities for accountability.
The Surveillance Project’s referral suggests that Wray may not have been fully aware of the allegations while testifying before Congress in 2020 and 2021. It seems he received only routine briefings on election integrity threats, despite warnings about China’s ongoing foreign influence operations.
Weaponization of Catholics
In a December 2023 report from the House Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on Federal Government Weaponization, the FBI was criticized for abusing counterterrorism resources to target Catholic Americans as potential domestic terrorists. At least one confidential informant was used to develop these assessments, posing a significant challenge to the religious freedoms of many.
Congressional monitoring of the FBI’s anti-Catholic actions has been ongoing, particularly since a memo was leaked that inaccurately linked supporters of Catholicism to violent extremism.
Wray previously claimed that only one memo was produced by the Richmond Field Office, but investigations have revealed that it distributed multiple documents, making allegations substantiated by the Southern Poverty Law Center.
The Surveillance Project’s criminal introduction claims Wray has repeatedly provided false testimony regarding this anti-Catholic memo. His inability to accurately describe the memo’s production and the existence of further related documents raises questions about accountability.
Howell expressed skepticism about ever achieving accountability but emphasized that the government’s responsibility towards bad actors should be paramount. He stated that the push for transparency is vital for establishing trust.
