Pa. Senate candidate David McCormick, in front row at rally: Trump 'lucky to be alive'

Republican Senate candidate David McCormick of Pennsylvania said in a live telephone interview with Fox News that he was in the front row of a rally for former President Trump when shots rang out. Just minutes before the apparent attack, Trump had told the crowd he was going to bring McCormick onto the stage.

“There were seven or eight shots fired,” McCormick said. “It’s hard to tell if they were coming from the same direction or if they were coming from two different weapons. It was unclear.”

“Sadly, someone in the stands behind me was definitely injured and bleeding a lot,” McCormick said.

“I was sitting to the right of President Trump when he was facing the crowd,” McCormick said. “Some of the shots appear to have been fired from his left side, which makes sense because someone behind me was hit. It appears that at least some of the shots were fired from that side of the crowd.”

“I’m not an expert on this, but it sounded like a small caliber weapon,” McCormick said. “At first I thought it might be fireworks or something, but then I heard a series of gunshots and it was clearly a weapon, a firearm.”

McCormick said the injured person appeared to be a man in the crowd, who had wrapped his shirt around himself to try to stop the bleeding. Police officers responded and removed the man from the stands. McCormick said he did not know if anyone else was injured.

Asked if Trump was lucky to be alive, McCormick replied: “I think so. Yes, definitely I think so.”

“When you’re in the middle of a crisis you don’t want to jump to too many conclusions, but I felt very lucky he was alive and I hope the other people that were injured survive as well. It was a very scary moment,” McCormick said.
