Pacific Surfliner launches round trips between Los Angeles and San Luis Obispo.

New Train Service From Los Angeles to Central Coast

This spring, California’s stunning coastline got a little easier to explore with the introduction of daily round-trip train service between Los Angeles and the Central Coast. Starting May 4, Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliner is set to provide more connectivity for both leisure and business travelers heading to San Luis Obispo (SLO).

The new routes will make it possible for more passengers to travel daily from Los Angeles, Ventura, and Santa Barbara to SLO, enhancing regional mobility. Jason Jewell, managing director of the Los Angeles Rail Corridor Authority, expressed optimism, stating that this expanded service offers more convenient travel choices along the Central Coast.

He added, “This new round trip will improve connectivity across the corridor and provide motorists with a comfortable alternative to driving.”

Included in the new schedule are six daily trips to Goleta, located just west of Santa Barbara, and three to San Luis Obispo, which should make it easier for everyone to travel for work or leisure activities.

Martin Erickson, executive director of the Ventura County Transportation Commission, commented that this new service “strengthens Ventura County’s connection to the broader Southern California rail network.” It seems that more options during peak weekday times will help residents and workers navigate the region better.

Santa Barbara County leaders chimed in, noting that increased rail service offers greater flexibility for getting to and from the region. They highlighted the additional trips as a result of the county’s Measure A, which imposes a half-cent sales tax for transportation improvements. This was, perhaps, a move in response to public demand for better commuting options.

Thanks to Measure A, officials believe they are addressing the needs of voters who asked for enhanced commuting alternatives for work, school, and other everyday travel.

Stretching over 351 miles, Pacific Surfliner’s coastal corridor links passengers from San Diego, Ventura, and SLO counties, and boasts comfortable seating and free onboard Wi-Fi.

For commuters, this new daily service could mean more time to relax on the way to work, all while enjoying the beautiful views and steering clear of the long lines seen on some of California’s busiest highways.

For those interested in trip planning or updating existing itineraries, a new schedule will be available online. This development couldn’t come at a better time, especially with rising gas prices in California pushing residents to seek out alternatives for their travel needs.
