The Green Bay Packers’ plan is working.
The franchise selected Jordan Love, who would eventually become Aaron Rodgers’ successor, in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft.
The move was not very popular at the time.
But it’s a model the Packers have used successfully before: They drafted Rodgers in 2005 to eventually replace Brett Favre.

Love struggled after the Packers traded Rodgers to the New York Jets, but his first full season was a success.
Love reportedly parlayed that into a historic contract extension, as he and the team reportedly agreed to a four-year, $220 million contract extension.
The $55 million salary would tie him with Trevor Lawrence and Joe Burrow as the biggest ever, and the $220 million would be the largest four-year contract ever, surpassing the deal Tua Tagovailoa agreed to with the Miami Dolphins that was reported early Friday.

Love also received a $75 million signing-on bonus and $155 million guaranteed.
He becomes the eighth quarterback to sign a $50 million annual salary since last year, joining Tagovailoa, Lawrence, Burrow, Jalen Hurts, Justin Herbert, Jared Goff and Lamar Jackson.
This came after the Packers’ media relations team abruptly ended Love’s media session at training camp after a reporter asked about Love’s contract status.
Love was also not expected to practice until a deal was finalized, but is expected to return to the field soon.
Love started off strong in the 2023 season, throwing three touchdowns in each of the first two games, but his form dropped off over the next six games, recording just six touchdowns and eight interceptions.
But after Week 10, he dominated, completing 67.9% of his passes over his final 11 games, including the postseason, for 2,905 yards and 25 touchdowns.
Love and the Packers earned the seventh seed in the NFC and upset the second-seeded Cowboys in Dallas.

The Packers were leading the top-seeded San Francisco 49ers 21-14 late in the third quarter in the divisional round, but the 49ers fought back to win.
