Padres unveil ‘OMG’ sign after Jose Iglesias claimed it ‘belongs’ to Mets

Maybe we’re on the verge of a brief “OMG” era for the Padres, especially after they played a role in the Mets’ captivating journey.

Before the Padres faced off against the Mariners on Saturday, TV host and reporter Annie Heilbrunn posted a video showing players picking up “OMG” signs in Padres colors and distributing them to others in team apparel.

The specific origins of that sign aren’t clear, but Heilbrunn suggested it might be “a gift from a fan.”

Throughout the last four months of the 2024 season, those three letters were seen at Citifield and within the Mets’ dugout. It was an unusual sight considering the Mets turned their struggling season around and reached the World Series.

Iglesias, who goes by “Candelita” in the music world, found success with his song “OMG,” which hit number one on Billboard’s Latin digital songs chart, and even had a remix featuring Pitbull after a home game on June 28.

Mets fans embraced the Journeyman infielder as “OMG” banners popped up across the stands.

Those letters became closely associated with the team’s success.

It also contributed to Iglesias’ presence in the lineup.

Though 2025 didn’t see a reunion, the Mets opted not to pursue Iglesias in the offseason, choosing instead to give younger players their chance rather than signing the 35-year-old.

Iglesias mentioned that the spirit of “OMG” stays with the former Queens team and expressed his surprise at the turn of events that led him to sign with the Padres.

“The ‘OMG’ belongs to the Mets,” Iglesias commented during a visit to New York to face the Yankees. “It’s a song that everyone clearly listens to, but ‘OMG’ is the Mets. That’s my perspective.”

Currently batting .228 over 30 games this season, Iglesias isn’t expected to return to Citifield until September.
