Paige Bueckers’ first game: Rookie scores 10 points in defeat against Lynx

Paige Bueckers Makes WNBA Debut

Paige Bueckers took her first steps in the WNBA on Friday. The former UConn standout managed to score 10 points over three quarters, along with seven rebounds and two assists in a matchup against the Minnesota Lynx. Despite her efforts, the Dallas Wings fell short, losing 99-84 in their season opener.

Bueckers expressed a sense of relief following her inaugural game. “The first one is always the toughest,” she remarked. “Instead of pretending it won’t be challenging, you know you have a starting point to build from. There’s really no question about what it’s like going into your first WNBA game.”

Wings head coach Chris Cokran praised Bueckers, highlighting her ability to handle the expectations and pressure of her rookie season. “She was fantastic. There’s something special about how she manages everything with such poise,” he said. “As a team, we’re focusing a lot on strengthening our mental game, navigating external pressures, and figuring out how to deal with it all.”

“Paige came in with an incredible personal touch and fit well with our team dynamic,” Cokran added. The Wings’ Arike Ogunbowale led the team with 16 points, while rookie Dihony Carrington added 15 points in her debut.

On the other side of the court, Napheesa Collier impressed with 34 points, supported by Courtney Williams who contributed 25 points and nine assists.

The Lynx, who lost to the New York Liberty in the WNBA Finals last season, ended with a distinguished record of 30-10. It’s clear, as the season unfolds, both teams have their work cut out for them.
