The former mistress of Sherone Moore, the ex-head coach of Michigan State football, has successfully challenged a sentence that spared him prison after a threatening stalking incident. Paige Shriver, 32, voiced her outrage that Moore, 40, faced up to five years behind bars but was only given 18 months of probation after breaking into her home following the end of their relationship.
“December 10th was the most terrifying day of my life,” Shriver stated after attending the sentencing hearing. She detailed the distressing events, saying, “His actions were frightening and violent. He broke into my apartment, cried, yelled, and even attacked me with a knife. I genuinely feared for my life.”
She further criticized the sentence, claiming it did not adequately reflect the harm she endured or the evidence presented.
Moore, who was earning $5.5 million annually, allegedly entered Shriver’s residence on December 10, after she lost her job due to a two-year secret relationship with his assistant. In a disturbing episode, he reportedly threatened to take his own life with kitchen utensils inside Shriver’s apartment.
Originally charged with felony burglary and stalking, Moore last month reached an agreement that allowed him to forgo a trial in exchange for contesting two misdemeanor charges: one for malicious use of a telecommunications device in a domestic setting and the other for trespassing.
During sentencing, Judge J. Cedric Simpson of Washtenaw County described the prison sentence as inadequate but cautioned Moore that any probation violation would negate his lenient treatment. He emphasized that his ruling should not minimize what Shriver had experienced, reminding her of the court’s acknowledgment of her trauma.
Simpson also expressed disbelief at Moore’s actions, stating, “You had no right to do what you did. I know she was terrified. That day was traumatic for both of you, but you inflicted your pain on her.” He noted that his decision was also influenced by the presence of Moore’s wife, Kelly, who sat in the courtroom. “Sir, you took her for granted,” the judge remarked, recognizing Kelly’s strength in such a challenging situation.
