Paige Spiranac has spoken out against the unsavory behavior exhibited by fans towards Rory McIlroy of Team Europe during the 2025 Ryder Cup.
On X, she addressed the situation surrounding the 36-year-old golfer, noting that the “intoxicated” crowd was negatively affecting the sport. She expressed, “I’m sadly not shocked by the behavior of fans at the Ryder Cup because it’s become the norm at most sporting events. In my opinion, it needs to change in every sport,” after Team Europe triumphed over Team USA with a score of 15-13 at Beth Page Black.
Spiranac reflected on a recent soccer match she attended, where she was disturbed by an inebriated man who was a nuisance, hurling insults at players and rival fans, while his young nephew, likely around seven years old, mimicked his behavior. She emphasized how this kind of conduct is learned.
“I’m not saying you need to sit quietly; being passionate is part of the fun,” she added, underscoring that enjoyment shouldn’t mandate poor behavior.
Throughout the Ryder Cup, McIlroy faced significant verbal abuse, which intensified when his wife, Erika Stoll, was struck by a drink thrown from the crowd on Saturday. Spiranac condemned this act, calling for a lifetime ban for the culprit and shared a clip of the incident on X.
In an emotional response, McIlroy admitted that the crowd’s remarks affected him, and he engaged back with hecklers, a moment captured on social media. Complicated by recent personal issues, including a public divorce filing from Stoll last year, he faced additional taunts related to CBS sports reporter Amanda Balionis, who had been speculated to be linked with him after the divorce news, though McIlroy and Stoll have since reconciled.
Despite the turmoil, McIlroy remarked on the “difficult week” it had been for Team Europe, even with the victory. He stated, “I don’t think we should accept that in golf. I think golf should be held to a higher standard than what was seen this week. Golf has the ability to unite people. Golf teaches you very good life lessons; it teaches you etiquette.” He acknowledged that, while some comments did get to him, he tried to maintain dignity and composure throughout the event.
In the closing moments, Shane Lowry capped off the win with a crucial putt, securing back-to-back victories for the Europeans. The next Ryder Cup is slated to take place in Ireland in 2027.
