Rupert Lowe Discusses Controversial Gang Rape Inquiry
Rupert Lowe recently addressed a disturbing report regarding a gang rape incident involving a young white girl in the UK, primarily perpetrated by a Pakistani gang. This discussion came during a podcast episode with Joe Rogan last month, where Lowe shared his views on the matter.
Lowe raised concerns about an Islamic legal system operating alongside UK laws, suggesting that British authorities may be hesitant to act against it due to the significant ‘Muslim vote’ in the country.
Afzal Khan, a Pakistani-born Labour MP, expressed his anger over Lowe’s comments. Instead of engaging in a dialogue, Khan opted to file a complaint with the Parliamentary Secretary for Standards, which oversees the conduct of MPs.
Khan’s letter to Chief Justice Daniel Greenberg stated, “On July 8, MP Rupert Lowe claimed that parallel Sharia courts are tolerated within the UK judicial system. This is not only a blatant falsehood but also deeply inflammatory and fosters Islamophobia.”
Despite the UK government’s official stance denying any legal authority of Sharia law, there has been ongoing concern among MPs about the existence of Sharia councils as a parallel legal system. Reports indicate that these councils have been operating since the 1980s, with at least 30 significant Sharia courts noted as early as 2012.
A study from 2018 pointed out that many Muslim couples do not formally register their marriages, leading them to rely on these councils for resolving disputes. This report also highlighted troubling practices within some Islamic courts, including unfair treatment towards women and failure to report cases involving domestic violence.
Though the report underscored various issues with the Sharia court system, it oddly recommended tolerance, stating: “Closing the Islamic Law Council is not a viable solution.”
In his letter, Khan acknowledged the existence of Sharia councils in the UK, which can influence aspects of daily life for Muslims, indicating his frustration with more than just Lowe’s comments.
Khan criticized the “Rape Gang Inquiry Report,” which claimed that “Muslim gangs were responsible for child sexual abuse in the UK,” asserting that around 250,000 white girls have faced sexual violence linked primarily to Pakistani Muslim men since mass immigration began in the 1950s. He dismissed these statements as unfounded and “Islamophobic.”
Khan also referred to commentators from Al Jazeera labeling Lowe as a neo-Nazi. He expressed concerns over Lowe’s appearance on Rogan’s podcast, stating it was “very problematic,” particularly since Rogan had previously not challenged him. He mentioned comments related to concerns about a potential “Islamist country” acquiring nuclear capabilities.
Khan concluded his complaint by suggesting that Lowe’s words have created a hostile environment for Muslim MPs and that his alleged racist remarks should be investigated.
Lowe responded sarcastically, thanking Khan for reporting him to parliamentary authorities regarding his statements on the podcast, the inquiry, and criticism of Islamic courts. He remarked, “These are backward practices that have no place in our country. If Restore Britain came to power, they would all be banned from day one. That would be glorious.”
In addition, Lowe urged Khan to discuss any disagreements directly with him rather than seeking to suppress his views through official channels, views he claims are backed by the majority of British citizens.
