Concerns About Pakistan’s Use of Religion and Security Issues
Vienna: Military aviation analyst and historian Tom Cooper describes Pakistan as “a massive misuse of religion,” suggesting that significant change is unlikely. In a recent conversation, he pointed out that religion-based terrorism has spread beyond Pakistan, affecting regions like Nigeria and the Philippines.
Cooper emphasized that Pakistan has historically misused religion to support and fund jihadism across various areas, from West Africa to the Pacific. He noted that the country is troubled by its military dictatorship, with a strained relationship between military and civilian leaders characterized by multiple coups throughout history.
He mentioned that this ongoing military control hinders any resolution to underlying issues. Cooper also commented on India’s capabilities, stating that the Indian intelligence agency effectively monitors activities at Pakistan’s nuclear facilities.
“There’s an ongoing commentary from India’s Defense Minister, which underscores the need for vigilance regarding Pakistan’s nuclear operations,” he said, adding that concerns about Pakistan’s reliability in managing its nuclear arsenal should have been raised nearly two decades ago.
Cooper referenced how India engaged in military action in Pakistan, indicating doubts about the country’s control over nuclear weapons. He expressed that the situation remains concerning, as India continues to closely monitor Pakistan’s nuclear activities.
“This careful observation by India regarding Pakistan’s nuclear facility indicates that the situation hasn’t improved significantly,” he remarked, hinting at the possibility that India may even have satellites surveilling Pakistan.
