So soft from Pope! He lunges at a full ball and tries to drive it. I’m not really sure where he was attempting to hit it but the bat turned in his hand as he came down on the ball on an angle and it loops back to Sajid who takes a simple catch and celebrates in style.

Ladies and gentleman, we have a game on our hands. Pakistan’s double strike in the gloom last night, where they knocked over both of England’s openers, has them on the front foot. But if Baz’s ballers have taught us anything it’s that we should never write them off.

England need a further 261 to win to go along with the 36 runs they already have on a pitch that’s starting to misbehave. That they only managed 221 all-out in the first dig puts the task in context.

This would be a record chase in Asia, eclipsing the 209-5 England achieved back in 1961 when an unbeaten 66 from captain Ted Dexter’s saw his team home in Lahore. Back then England were in a similar hole at 17-2, so in a way they’re ahead of the game!

Wishful thinking as far as the tourists are concerned, especially with the wonderfully moustachioed Sajid Khan waiting to cause chaos with his twirly off-spinners.

main events
17 overs: England 61-4 (Brook 13, Stokes 3) It's all a sweep. There were some reversals, some traditional ones, but they were all broomsticks from England's batsmen. That forced Sajid to slow down further to find his grip and the top of the bat. Stokes collected two singles on either side of the wicket, Brooke scored a single of his own, and in the last over he successfully completed a couple looping off the bat past the two catchers behind the square.
no! Brooke will survive!
To be honest, I don't know why they reviewed it. It was clearly bounced right in front of the fielder. We'll have to wait a little longer for Sajid to unveil his trademark celebration.
Pakistan review of catch at backward short leg! Were you carrying it?
Brian Withington isn't so sure.
good morning daniel
It will be difficult to chase 97 now. 197 is unlikely. 297 is frankly ridiculous. And as I write, Root is given a hip before the wicket thanks to the umpire's online call.
Ben Stokes comes in with the biggest ticker in minimal form.
There is no doubt that this will be the best run chase of the McCullum/Stokes era.
16 overs: England 56-4 (Brook 10, Stokes 1) The England captain missed the mark with a reverse sweep from the first ball. Brooke sees the rest of the ending without a fuss. But that's all about the root's main scalp. From now on, it will be a big test for England's batting line-up.
Wicket! Root lbw Norman 18 (England 55-4)
Root is sent off due to the referee's call! He went low to Norman and stretched long forward to reach the sweep. He missed it and it kept hitting his hip. It would have hit the top of the off as it was pitched outside the off stump. But the important thing was that it just made contact with him along the stumps. If the umpire had given him no out, he would still have batted. This put England in a deep hole.
The route was swept and lbw came out! he reviews. Did it hit outside the line? That's the only thing that can save him here.
15 overs: England 53-3 (Root 16, Brook 10) Brooke isn't going to just stand there and accept it. He fought back with a surprisingly belligerent reverse sweep that found the back point fence. A normal sweep gets you a single and a punch from mid-off gets you two. A leg-bye with a pretty ugly hack from Root and he would go on to strike.
14 overs: England 45-3 (Pope 16, Brook 3) Brooke is off the mark with a cute paddle for two people with narrow legs. He then picked up a single and monopolized the strikes. Norman slows down and feeds the ball down the field. But maybe he's bowling too much.
Russ Weeden also contributed with a heroic intervention.

13th over: England 41-3 (Root 15, Brook 0) Sajid's early successes are fun to watch. Root pulls out a reverse sweep. It looks a bit ungainly, but he manages to get away with a 2-2 and the last ball he hits one off his feet. The Pope will vomit bile at the thought of his removal.

We're going to need something special from here, Matthew Doherty.
Wicket! Pope C&B Sajid 22 (England 37-3)
So soft from the pope! He rushes to the full ball and tries to drive. I'm not quite sure where he was going to bat, but the bat spun in his hands as it fell diagonally to the ball and looped back to Sajid, who took a simple catch and celebrated in style.
12 overs: England 37-2 (Pope 22, Root 12) It's full of Norman from the crease all the way around. Pope seems to be moving forward and poking at it while defending. The landing is a little short, giving it an opportunity to spin over the outside edge and lift off the seam. The last ball is over pitched and Pope is able to tuck it through the covers for a single.
The day started with Norman Ali.
Ian Ward wonders what the odds are that Popple will play a sweep on the first ball.
The players are preparing to go on the field.
Mike Atherton reminds us that this is effectively Day 9's pitch. Remember, this is the same strip used in the first test. When you think about it, it's outrageous.
Jeremy Boyce is our first correspondent this morning.
“I don’t know what the worry is about England’s innings? According to the latest quantum cricket theory (B. McCullum/B. Stokes), they will either be all out before 50 (Copyright 2024 India) or Either we'll bounce this lot off in time for a fancy lunch.''
Is it boom or bust? That's an incredible way to play!
Does anyone know of any overseas links for TMS?
That way you will help a lot of people.
As any expert will tell you, it's usually not a good sign when a team sends a coach to handle post-play media duties.
Is this a sign that England are unsettled? I don't know. In any case, it was their assistant coach, paul collingwoodThey took the lead last night, underscoring the “belief” within the camp that they can defeat this powerful target.

Ladies and gentlemen, we have a match ahead of us. Pakistan's double in the dim light last night overcame both of England's openers and gave them the upper hand. But if the Buzz players have taught us anything, it's that we should never forget.
England need a further 261 points to win on top of the 36 they already have on a pitch that is starting to look bad. The fact that only 221 items were all-out on the first excavation clearly illustrates the status of this task.
This is a new record in Asia and surpasses England's record of 209 wins and 5 losses in 1961, when captain Ted Dexter won an unbeaten 66 games at home in Lahore. England were in a similar situation at the time with 17 wins and two losses, so in a way they are ahead of the game.
As far as tourists are concerned, it's wishful thinking, especially with Sajid Khan sporting a spectacular mustache looking to cause havoc with his twirling off-spinners.
It should be great no matter who wins. We look forward to bringing you all the action.

The first ball is scheduled for 6am BST.
