Palantir's CTO Shyam Sankar cautions the US about its AI competition with China

Palantir CTO Discusses AI and US-China Competition

Shyam Sankar, the chief technology officer and executive vice president of Palantir Technologies, recently shared insights in an interview about the U.S. competition with China in the realm of artificial intelligence. He emphasized the importance of maintaining competitiveness for American workers.

“At a wire manufacturing company, we’ve got someone who used to be in the Navy—no specialized training—yet he’s become a whiz at factory operations,” Sankar stated. “Thanks to AI, productivity has significantly surged.” He further explained that the company has seen a 50% increase in yields and a 20% decrease in machine downtime, demonstrating that this technology allows for higher output. Given the current geopolitical tensions, he argued, it’s crucial to bring jobs back to the U.S. “We have the chance to make American workers 50 times more productive, which is key for revitalizing local jobs,” he noted.

Sankar reiterated this perspective in a recent editorial, claiming that the narrative surrounding job losses is often a tactic to attract attention from investors and media while solidifying political power. He expressed optimism about AI’s potential to enhance American productivity and creativity.

However, he also voiced concerns about what might happen if the U.S. fails to fully embrace AI technology. “I’m really hesitant to envision that scenario,” he admitted. “When you consider that China’s productivity is growing at 6% while the U.S. is only around 0.5%, that’s a serious issue for us.” He sees the ability to leverage AI as a unique advantage, something not accounted for in China’s long-term strategies.

Sankar believes that AI could serve as an unexpected advantage in maintaining U.S. leadership, stating, “For over 50 years, China has aimed to undermine American prosperity, but they didn’t foresee the role of AI in this equation. The onus is on us to figure out how to make the best use of our strengths: the American workforce and AI to rebuild our industrial base and productivity.”
