Panthers defeat Oilers in Game 5, nearing a second Stanley Cup win

Florida Panthers Capture Second Straight Stanley Cup Title

EDMONTON, Alberta – Brad Marchand netted two goals, while Sam Bennett tallied his 15th goal of the NHL playoffs. The Florida Panthers secured their second consecutive Stanley Cup title with a 5-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday night.

This playoff season, the Panthers have shown strong performances on the road, now boasting a 10-3 record away from home. Winning Game 6 at their home rink will allow them to celebrate once again on Tuesday night.

Unlike some earlier finals games, Florida managed to establish and maintain a multi-goal lead.

Sergei Bobrovsky received solid backing from a defense that limited the Oilers to just 21 shots, making several crucial saves that were imperative for the win.

Alongside Marchand and Bennett, Sam Reinhart contributed to the scoring. Marchand’s performance sees him joining Mario Lemieux as one of only two players in the last fifty years to score more than five goals in the finals. He now holds the record for the most career goals in the finals among active players with 13.

Conor McDavid was the first to score for the Oilers, cutting into a 3-0 deficit.

Reinhart restored the Panthers’ three-goal lead just 46 seconds into the game, and an attempt by Corey Perry to trim the score further came too late with only 3:13 remaining.

Eetu Luostarinen wrapped things up with an empty-net goal with 1:19 on the clock, effectively quieting the once-boisterous crowd.

The Oilers’ power play had struggled, moving from 0 to 3 without generating much momentum against the Panthers’ penalty kill, which includes McDavid and Leon Draisaitl.

Calvin Picard, who had won the previous eight starts for Edmonton, faced a challenging night, allowing four goals on 18 shots. After stepping in for Stuart Skinner, who was nodding to be the next starter, Picard’s record now stands at 7-1.

Skinner could return for Game 6, where the Panthers will aim to close out the series as they travel back across the continent.

This comes on the heels of a previous three-goal lead being squandered in overtime during Game 4.
