Panthers promising rookie Jonathon Brooks tears ACL 3 weeks after recovering from same injury

Concerns about Carolina Panthers rookie running back Jonathon Brooks were confirmed Monday. The second-round pick re-torn his ACL and will miss the remainder of the season.

It's a sad situation for Brooks, a second-round pick out of Texas. He tore his right anterior cruciate ligament, the same one he rehabbed from last year's tear, during his final season with the Longhorns, the team announced Monday.

Brooks only returned to the Panthers three weeks ago and will undergo another extensive rehabilitation program after having his ligament repaired.

Brooks attempted to cut to the left and land on his right foot, but felt something was wrong and immediately collapsed, causing no injury from the contact. They only played in the first quarter against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Brooks tried to walk to the sideline on his own, but fell on the grass and needed help getting off the field.

The running back tore his ACL in November 2023 while the University of Texas was in the College Football Playoff, a huge blow not only to the Longhorns but also to Brooks' draft stock.

Brooks totaled 1,139 yards, 286 receiving yards and 11 total touchdowns in 11 games with the Longhorns before getting injured in 2023, his first year back as a major player in college football.

His success in Austin last year led many to believe he would be a first-round pick, but an ACL injury dropped him to the second round, where he was selected 46th overall by the Panthers. The team understood he needed time to continue his rehabilitation, and the Panthers were willing to help him through the process.

Carolina struggled again after going 2-15 last season, leading some to question whether Brooks should be on the field again this season.

But when Brooks was on the field in his NFL debut against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 12, the offensive line was still led by Tuba Hubbard.

Brooks was used sparingly, but he rushed for 25 yards on eight carries before Sunday's game against the Eagles.
