Parent arrested for murder in Kentucky State University dormitory shooting

Shooting Incident at Kentucky State University Dormitory

A man has been arrested following a shooting at a Kentucky State University dormitory, which resulted in one student’s death and left another seriously injured. Authorities revealed that the suspect, 48-year-old Jacob Lee Byrd, is actually the parent of a student enrolled at the university.

This tragic event occurred at the Whitney M. Young Jr. Dormitory on the university’s south side. Byrd, who hails from Evansville, Indiana—about 240 miles from Frankfort—faces formal charges of murder and first-degree assault related to the incident on Tuesday.

The deceased was identified as 19-year-old Dejon Fox from Indianapolis. The other student remains in critical condition, but details regarding their identity have not been disclosed.

Investigators indicated that the shooting appeared to involve only the individuals concerned, though specifics about the incident or Byrd’s motivations have not yet been made public.

In the wake of the shooting, questions arose about a reported altercation involving Byrd’s sons prior to the event. There were also inquiries regarding whether Byrd had visited the campus to discuss potential safety concerns for his children. However, Assistant Police Chief Scott Tracy refrained from providing further details about what may have led to the altercation.

On Wednesday, Tracy mentioned that it was “still too early to reveal the details” concerning the investigation, emphasizing the potential for speculation when discussing the events leading up to the incident.

The police are actively reviewing surveillance footage and videos from bystanders as part of their investigation. Responding officers arrived on the scene just minutes after receiving reports of the shooting at approximately 3:10 p.m., with Byrd already detained by campus police.

Currently, Byrd is being held at the Franklin County Regional Jail.
