Parents charged with murder in the death of their 255-pound son

Charges Filed in Death of Obese Boy

The parents of a 7-year-old boy, who tragically weighed 255 pounds when he passed away from heart failure, are facing serious charges of “unusual and gross negligence,” according to prosecutors.

Damian O’Brien, 40, and Jessica O’Brien, 41, are also charged with child abuse and torture in connection to their son, Casper. It’s worth noting that Casper had never attended school and had seen a doctor only once.

Genesee County Prosecutor David Layton described the situation as “cruel and extreme suffering caused to this child by parental neglect.” The couple also has a 5-year-old daughter.

On November 4, 2025, law enforcement responded to a 911 call about a child in distress at the family’s run-down residence in Flint Township, Michigan. Casper was taken to a local hospital but sadly died shortly after due to dilated cardiomyopathy. Medical reports indicate that this condition was linked to severe obesity.

At the time of his death, Casper stood at 4 feet 2 inches tall, significantly exceeding the CDC’s healthy weight range of 50 to 73 pounds for a boy his height.

Layton pointed out that the child had no pediatrician, and the parents apparently took him to a doctor only once. Interestingly, on the morning of Casper’s death, they had called a veterinarian for their dog.

Layton emphasized that, in the eyes of authorities, “none of these kids existed.” Child Protective Services had never intervened, and none of the children were even enrolled in school.

“This demonstrates extraordinary and gross disregard for this situation,” he stated, adding that he views it as deliberate neglect, which he believes equates to second-degree murder.
