Parents face charges after child crawls towards wolves unsupervised and gets hurt

Incident at ZooAmerica Involving Toddler and Wolf

During the past weekend, a toddler was injured after crawling into a restricted area at ZooAmerica in Hersheypark, where a wolf made contact with the child. The 18-month-old was reportedly unsupervised when this occurred.

The parents, residents of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, faced misdemeanor charges of child endangerment, as they were apparently about 25 to 30 feet away, absorbed in their cell phones when the incident happened. The Derry Township Police Department is said to be investigating the event further.

ZooAmerica shared that the child crawled under a perimeter fence and accessed the wolf enclosure. They noted that the wolf’s behavior was typical for its kind and not aggressive in nature. Fortunately, the injuries sustained by the child were minor, which is a relief to the zoo staff.

The wolf pack consists of three: Twister, a male, along with two female wolves named Hazel and Freya. At this stage, the specific wolf involved in the incident has not been identified.

According to the Maryland-based Association of Zoos and Aquariums, injuries to visitors—especially minors—are considered unusual, thanks to strict safety measures that include secure barriers and enclosures to minimize direct animal contact.

Experts point out that the number of incidents usually arises from visitors bypassing safety measures, such as climbing fences. Jami Lovullo, president of the California-based Animal Protection Agency, emphasized that zoos typically make extensive efforts to ensure public safety. Additionally, she noted that supervision of young children is crucial during zoo visits.

Many zoos, such as the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo and the Louisville Zoo, have clear guidelines that require adults to supervise children at all times. The spokesperson from ZooAmerica reiterated the importance of compliance with safety protocols, stating their commitment to the welfare of both visitors and animals.

The zoo urges guests to stay within designated areas, highlighting that clear signage and fencing are present to maintain a safe environment. Ultimately, while zoo facilities are designed to be secure, the responsibility of supervision begins with parents.
