Parents in Washington Face Trial for Trying to 'Honor Kill' Their Teenage Daughter

Trial for Alleged Attempted Honor Killing in Washington

In Lacey, Washington, the parents of a teenage girl are currently on trial for attempted murder in what has been described as an “honor killing.” This case stems from an incident where their 17-year-old daughter refused to return to Iraq to marry an older man in October 2024.

The proceedings are taking place in Thurston County Superior Court, focusing on the allegations against the girl’s parents, Ihsan and Zahraa Ali. They are accused of attempting to murder their daughter during a dispute over her marriage plans, as reported recently by various outlets.

Andy Ngô, a senior editor, mentioned that the parents, who are described as fundamentalist Muslims from Iraq, reportedly attempted to strangle their daughter. He noted that they were unhappy with her American lifestyle, particularly her relationship with a boyfriend.

Additionally, it has come to light that one of the suspects does not speak English, which adds another layer to the case.

Court documents reveal that the father threatened the daughter with an “honor killing” when she refused to go through with the marriage. On the day she was meant to leave for Iraq, she escaped after seeking help from a counselor, who directed her to Timberline High School and a youth shelter. However, her parents reportedly found her near a bus stop as she was making her way to safety.

Video footage from the bus stop captures the moment when other young people intervened, yelling for someone to “call the cops.” Witnesses reported that the father was physically attacking his daughter during the incident, with one bus driver noting that it was evident she was in distress, struggling to breathe.

According to reports, the victim’s boyfriend was also assaulted during the clash, and witnesses recalled that when she attempted to escape, her mother physically restrained her.

The girl managed to break away and sought refuge at her school, where officials took measures to secure the building. The parents are facing multiple charges, including attempted murder, assault, and breaching a protective order.

This case raises significant discussions about the cultural and social issues surrounding “honor killings.”
