AAU Basketball Costs Surprise Parents in Ohio

Parents of AAU basketball players, accustomed to high expenses at tournaments, encountered unexpected costs over the weekend in Ohio. The landscape of these events seems to have shifted.

Kevin Brandt, whose daughter plays on a top travel team in the Midwest, found himself shaking his head after attending a tournament at Hamilton’s Spooky Nook complex.

Brandt expressed his disbelief, noting that his family spent $260 just to attend the Select Showcase tournament. “Does anyone feel a little guilty about this?!” he questioned, reflecting on their costly weekend experience.

He mentioned considering a weekend pass, which usually spans $70 to $90, but this time, it wasn’t an option in Hamilton. Instead, they faced separate admission fees for two different tournaments held at the same venue: the Select Events Super Showcase and the Midwest Summer Classic.

“They said it was two ‘separate’ events. We paid $120 for each,” he explained, adding that parking cost an additional $5 per day.

The family chose to drive two and a half hours round trip rather than pay inflated hotel rates, which soared over $300 for one night. His son and girlfriend’s visit also added another $60 to the family’s expenses. Brandt’s experience has resonated with many AAU parents who share similar concerns.

Efforts to reach the management at Spooky Nook for clarification on admission and parking pricing went unanswered.

Meanwhile, Mookie Edmond, another AAU parent, experienced a different scenario at a tournament in Rock Hill, South Carolina, where weekend passes were priced around $90. While she acknowledges the significant financial commitment, she emphasized that families are willing to invest in their children’s futures. “We’re going to do whatever we have to do to take him to the next level,” Edmond stated, despite her own hefty expenses nearing $1,500 for the weekend.

“I’m scratching my head this weekend because I really want to get back to it,” she admitted, revealing the strain that these tournaments can put on families.
