Parents protest NYC school superintendent’s mystery ouster — and blast it as DOE cronyism

Brooklyn families and educators are calling for the recovery of the popular school principal after Prime Minister Melissa Aviles Ramo inexplicably pulled him in the slums of critics as Chronism.

Aviles Ramos expelled District 16 superintendent Brendan Mims on Monday, appointed by his predecessor David Banks, and ousted him to the city education department, which will host student suspension hearings, insiders say.

It was the first major personnel change by Aviles Ramos since she began as Prime Minister on January 1.

“We were all blind,” Sharonda Vasquez, a business owner and twin mom at Bedford Stuyvesant, told the post. “That’s unfair and meaningless.”

Fabayo Macintosh, who was tapped to replace MIM with a proxy supervisor, is a longtime friend and longtime friend of Nequan MacLean, the source said.

McLean is a member of the city’s School Diversity Advisory Group and president of the District 16 District Education Council, a member of the Education Council Consortium, an anti-racist advocacy group.

Sources said McLean “has a clear personal interest in the outcome” and helped to coordinate the move.

He did not reply to requests for comment.

The DOE refused to explain the removal of Mims, saying it would only provide the service “freely.”

The spokesman would also not say whether MIMS will maintain a $234,029 urban salary.

Mims, an educator for over 20 years, was appointed by the bank in a bureaucratic shake-up in 2022, claiming that the supervisor would be more responsible.

“The man had clear support,” said supporter Marlon Rice, citing his extensive involvement in the Mims community.

“He not only asserts about his child’s education, but also asserts about equipping his parents with what he needs so he can do what he needs for his children,” said parent Kelly Cooper.

On Friday afternoon, a petition calling for the recovery of MIMS received over 760 signatures.

Last year, District 16 Community Education Council began calling for a meeting to address “concerns” with MIMS, taking MP Stefani Zinerman into conversations with the city, according to a post and a message shared.

Zinerman said the DOE did not explain Mims’ asylum, calling it “HR issues.”

“We thought everything was going well,” Jinnerman said at a meeting of about 50 parents, community members, principals and non-PS 25 school administrators on Thursday.

“We know that he did nothing against the law or policy,” a Congress woman said.

Zinerman is currently requesting that the city bring in mediators, hold meetings of community stakeholders, and conduct a public review of MIMS records, she said in a letter to the DOE.

“This is not the first time that the 16th Ward overseer has faced early removal in a political or interpersonal conflict,” she noted.

MacIntosh suddenly left Lee’s assistant superintendent in December 2023, working as deputy prime minister of DOE school leader Danika Rux.
