If Day 11 belonged to the USA, with Gabby Thomas and Cole Hocker excelling on the track and Amit Elor winning on the mat, then Day 12 was all Australia. The wizards from Oz surged to 18 gold on the back of a new record for most gold medals in a single day.

What made the green and gold army’s four-gold strike all the more remarkable was the diversity of disciplines from whence it sprang. There was gold in the field, gold at the skate park, gold on the high seas and gold inside the velodrome.

Important Events
Great Britain’s Matt Hudson-Smith missed out on the 400m gold medal by just 0.4 seconds yesterday, a bittersweet ending made even more so by the fact that he would have been Britain’s first 400m gold medalist since “The Flying Scotsman” Eric Liddell in 1924, a race made even more famous by its depiction in the 1981 classic film, Chariots of Fire.
It was a glorious day for Australia but a day of hope for the British team.
This victory is down to the incredible journey that Australian team coach Tim Decker has been on, overcoming more obstacles than anyone else to lead his cyclists to great heights both on and off the track. Tim told Kieran Pender:
For me, coaching is more than a program on paper. Coaching is the bond and belief you instill in your athlete. Coaching is about not shying away from challenges and helping your athlete achieve results they never thought possible.
One of the big boilovers of the tournament was yesterday at the Velodrome in Australia. Men’s Team Pursuit It was a narrow victory over Team GB in one of the most prestigious Olympic cycling events, as vividly described by Kieran Pender, with both teams fighting for the lead by milliseconds until the very end in a high-speed, hard-fought battle that ultimately gave Australia its first track cycling gold medal since 2012.
This is an extreme endurance race over a gruelling 4,000 metres. This is a race where man and machine are one, where the aerodynamic advantages of equipment are considered as meticulously as an individual’s training plan. This is a race where seconds are measured to three decimal places, down to milliseconds. And finally, this is the race where Australia is crowned Olympic champion.
One of the great things about the Olympics is that it captivates spectators like you and me. With a wealth of gold medal-winning journalism and first-rate photography, Crunch Give us a great data visualization of the Paris Games.
Much has been made of the athletic feats of the athletes at the Paris Olympics, but less has been said about the mental agility and psychological resilience it takes to scale such heights.
Lead psychologist Jess Thom said: British teamHe spoke to The Guardian’s Madeleine Finlay about how he’s setting up his athletes for failure and success, and the challenges that arise when the tournament is over and people have to return to normal life.
Simon Burnton reckons these are the notable highlights of Day 13…

climbing
Today is the last day of competition for both men and women. After the women’s bouldering and lead semifinals, the men’s speed final will take place (in Tokyo, there was one event each for men and women, and all three events combined, but it has since been split into two). Since 2021, speed climbing has gotten a lot faster, well, faster. The men’s world record has been broken 11 times since then, with Indonesia’s Vedrick Leonard becoming the first person to go under five seconds last year, and the US’s Sam Watson breaking it twice in one day in April. -
Track Cycling
Two great cycling events finish today: the quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals of the Women’s Keirin, in which riders chase speed-controlled electric bikes for several laps before sprinting towards the finish line. The four Men’s Omnium events culminate in fantastic points races, each more dramatic, spectacular, chaotic and perplexing than the last. The schedule is reversed, with the Men’s Keirin and Women’s Omnium (and the Women’s Sprint Final) taking place on Sunday. -
Athletics: Women’s 400m Hurdles
A highly anticipated showdown between the two fastest women of all time over the distance, Femke Boll of the Netherlands and Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone of the United States, could be one of the highlights of the track and field season this year. The American spent 2023 focusing on flat running, before returning to the hurdles in Atlanta in May and running her fastest time so far this year, only for Boll to beat that record 12 days later. Boll has also performed well on the flat in recent years, breaking the indoor world record twice, but this is the event in which they both excel.
In terms of medal totals, 72 countries made it onto the podium at the Paris Games.
So what can we expect on Day 13?

preamble
Hello everyone and welcome to our live coverage of the thirteenth day of official competition at the Paris 2024 Summer Olympic Games.
Day 11 was a victory for the USA, with Gabby Thomas and Cole Hocker on the track and Amit Errol on the mat, but Day 12 was a victory for Australia, whose wizards set a new record for the most gold medals won in a single day, taking their tally to 18.
What makes the green and gold’s four gold medals even more remarkable is the diversity of the sports they came from: There was a track and field gold medal, a skatepark gold medal, an open seas gold medal and a velodrome gold medal.
Already ranked third behind the superpowers of the United States and China, Australia extended its lead over France (13 gold medals) and Great Britain (12), propelling Australia’s powerhouse team to its highest gold medal haul in history.
