Important Events
If you don’t understand something, please raise your hand. actually What happened in soccer yesterday… Hey guys, great, we’re the same. Let’s try to sort this confusion out.
Before kick-off between Morocco and Argentina, Argentina players and the national anthem were booed and jeered by fans at the Saint-Étienne stadium, likely in response to the racist scandal of Enzo Fernández, who was filmed by the Chelsea midfielder singing racist and homophobic chants against France during their Copa America victory celebrations.
Morocco was leading 2-1 until Argentina equalised just before the end of the game (15 minutes into added time).
The match was stopped as Moroccan fans stormed onto the pitch. The players were sent off and off the pitch for over an hour. VAR then stepped in (obviously), adjudicating an offside on the way to the equaliser. So Argentina’s goal was ruled out more than 60 minutes after it was scored. An unprecedented event.
The match eventually finished, with Morocco winning 2-1. Argentina coach Javier Mascherano called the whole incident a “circus”, but it certainly raises questions about security at the tournament.
French police have been notorious for mishandling the events leading up to the 2022 Champions League final.
The women’s individual ranking round in archery is also taking place this morning.
Olympic archery will begin with ranking rounds before the match play rounds scheduled later in the tournament.
Lim Si-hyun is currently leading the way, part of a young South Korean team eager to defend its team title in Tokyo and win a 10th individual gold medal in the event.
But the competition is stiff: No. 1-ranked Casey Kaufhold is hoping to become the first U.S. women’s individual gold medalist since LuAnn Ryan won gold in Montreal in 1976.
Mexico’s Alejandra Valencia is the world championship runner-up and will be competing for the fourth time.
The archery competition will take place at the Hôtel des Invalides, a complex that traces France’s military heritage and was founded in 1687 during the reign of Louis XIV.
Its famous golden dome rises above the tranquil gardens surrounding this former military hospital-turned-museum. What’s inside? The final resting place of Napoleon.
Andy Murray withdraws from men’s singles, will only compete in doubles
There have been rumors, rumours and all but certainties, but now it’s official: Andy Murray will not play singles in Paris. His singles career is over.
“I have decided to step back from singles to focus on doubles with Dan. [Evans]”Training is going well and the teamwork is good,” Murray said today. “I’m really looking forward to playing for Great Britain again.”
The final buzzer sounded for the women’s handball match between Slovenia and Denmark. Denmark won 27-19.
Goalkeeper Sandra Toft made 13 saves as every Danish player earned playing time in the opening match.
Denmark are three-time Olympic champions (1996, 2000, 2004) but have failed to qualify for the past two tournaments. Led by Jesper Jensen, the Danish team is a new generation hoping to recapture past glory.
Handball will be played in two groups of six teams, with the top four progressing to the final tournament.
Ahead of today’s matches, let’s take a quick look at Team GB’s medal prospects. There’s the potential for history to be made in the men’s 1500m, a women’s lightweight double sculls world champion and a chance to claim glory in skateboarding.
Ben Bloom has more details.
