Paris 2024 Olympics: opening ceremony takes to the Seine – live | Paris Olympic Games 2024

Well, that is a very good question. One of the joys/terrors of covering an Olympic opening ceremony live is that everybody is very tight-lipped about it in advance. There are certain protocols – but protocols are there to be upended.

What we expect is that Greece will lead the athletes parade as is tradition, paying respect to the origins of the Olympic Games. It has then become usual for those in the IOC Refugee Olympic team to go second.

France will come last, as hosts. We expect the two teams in front of them to be Australia (as hosts in 2032) and the US (as hosts in 2028).

The rest of the countries and territories are then sandwiched in between those, in alphabetic order in French. Germany, for example, will be in with the ‘A’ boats as Allemagne, rather than ‘G’ for Germany or indeed ‘D’ for Deutschland.

There is a caveat though. It has been suggested that the smaller delegations might share boats, so some places that are only sending one or two competitors, like Andorra, Belize, the Cook Islands, Liechtenstein, Mauritania, Nauru, Somalia and Tuvalu, might become wild cards.

Opening ceremonies don’t make or break a Games as being considered a success, but can certainly set the tone, and often are the moment a host nation gets the Olympic spirit and gets behind hosting the Games.

Paris 2024 is promising a unique spectacle, as the for the first time the ceremony is a parade through the city, on a 6km route on the River Seine, rather than being stadium-bound.

It was an imaginative part of the city’s bid to host the Games, but has also become fraught with complexity, with residents complaining about large parts of the city being sealed off during the preparations, and security concerns meaning the promise of large crowds thronging the banks of the river have been scaled down.

One of the characteristics of the Olympic opening ceremony is the emphasis on the fashion of the uniforms worn by the athletes. Team USA Who hasn’t turned heads with the very traditional look of a blue jacket with red and white trim, paired with a blue striped shirt and jeans?

of Team GB Tonight’s flag bearer is a diver Tom Daley Helen the Rower GloverThey told the BBC.

“I’m honored,” Daly said, telling British viewers:

I remember walking in behind Mark Foster in 2008 and thinking how amazing it was just to be a part of that ceremony, so now, being at my fifth Olympic Games, and starting off like this is really special.

In a team meeting just before we came here, our performance director said, ‘It’s a very elite group to be an Olympic champion, but even fewer to be the flag bearer,’ so it’s a very honour and it’s going to be a special night.

Glover said the same thing.

It’s a real honour. Team GB is a fantastic team and I think they’re going to perform at their best over the next two weeks, so it’s a real honour to lead them and start the Olympics together.

Every Saturday, our newsletter features a message from the Editor-in-Chief Katherine VinerIn tomorrow’s newsletter we look at some of the challenges facing Paris 2024 and The Guardian’s reporting on it.

The run-up to the Paris Games was dominated by political turmoil in the host country, where the rise of the far-right was thwarted at the last minute by surprise parliamentary elections. Paris correspondent Angélique Chrysafis wrote about hopes across France that the greatest sporting spectacle on earth would help unite a divided nation and, with any luck, a divided planet. As sports reporter Andy Bull puts it, these Olympics have been reframed by the shadow of conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East.

surely, fraternity In the final days before the Olympics, France’s rail system was thrown into chaos this morning after a massive coordinated attack on the TGV network. Before that, there was the Russian spying scandal, with a 40-year-old chef arrested on suspicion of conspiring with foreign powers to commit “large-scale” destabilizing acts during the Olympics. There was also a spying scandal in sports, with defending women’s soccer champions Canada caught using a drone to spy on their opponents. Then there was chaos in the men’s tournament, including a pitch invasion during the Morocco-Argentina match, the aftermath of a racism scandal, and even a two-hour wait for a VAR decision. And Britain’s multiple medal winner Charlotte Dujardin was forced to withdraw from the equestrian events on Tuesday after a distressing video was released of her repeatedly whipping her horse.

Elsewhere, the Guardian visited the refugee team training and profiled their flag-bearer, boxer Cindy Ngamba. Simon Hattenstone interviewed British cycling great Victoria Pendleton, who spoke about crumbling under the pressure of the sport that made her famous. We also met surfer Sam Sills, who lived out of a van while trying to get Olympic certified; gymnast Becky Downey, who has spoken out against abuse in sport; and Etienne Stott, the 2012 gold medallist and now environmental activist who was accompanying the Ukrainian swimming team training when the bombs fell.

In what order will countries appear in the Olympic Opening Ceremony parade?

Well, that’s a very good question. The joy and the terror of broadcasting the Olympic Opening Ceremony live is that everyone is kept quiet about it beforehand. There are certain protocols, but the protocols are there to be subverted.

Welcome to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony

Bonjour! Salut! Bienvenue! Hello! Welcome! Welcome to the live coverage of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony!

While the opening ceremony does not determine the success of the Olympics, it certainly sets the tone and is often the moment when the host country gets into the Olympic spirit and gets behind the Games.

For Paris 2024, it will be the first time that the ceremony will take place not in a stadium but as a parade through the city, on a six-kilometer route along the Seine, promising some unique spectacle.

It was part of the city’s creative planning for the Olympics but has also been complicated by local frustration over the closure of large parts of the city in the run-up and safety concerns that have scaled back hopes of large crowds on the riverside.

Still, with the whole world watching, we’re hoping for a great show – tune in tonight at 7pm BST to bring you the best pictures, analysis and reaction – and my colleague David Hills brings you five takeaways to watch.
