Today’s Paralympics daily briefing offers a comprehensive rundown on what is happening.
Coombs’ lead role in badminton After the Games have come to a close the Porte de La Chapelle Arena in northern Paris will become a cultural hub serving the local community, hosting concerts, shows and – less excitingly – “various conferences”. Before Shakespeare or PowerPoint presentations get their chance to reverberate around the 8,000-seat space, it will play host to the rapid pwock thwock of shuttlecocks and today is finals day in badminton. Dan Bethell will be looking to go one step further than his silver medal in the SL3 para-badminton singles in Tokyo. Bethell lost out to India’s Pramad Bhagat in a closely fought final in 2021. Bhagat – the world No1 – is not competing in Paris after receiving an 18-month suspension for three whereabout failures in 12 months. Another Indian, Kumar Nitesh, is Bethell’s final opponent at lunchtime. In the evening session, Krysten Coombs goes for SH6 gold against the home hope Charles Noakes. Coombs took bronze in Tokyo. Away from the court the 33-year‑old has worked at Ikea and also as an actor, appearing in one episode of Game of Thrones, The Witcher and assorted pantomimes.
Robinson ready to tackle Australia ParalympicsGB’s wheelchair rugby team scooped a historic gold in Tokyo in 2021, scoring 14 tries in the 54-49 victory over USA. The sport was known as ‘Murderball’ during its early days and is still known for “noisy contact, frequently punctured tyres and even wheelchairs flipping over”. The Americans gained revenge in Sunday’s semi-final, leaving the British team trying to repeat their group-stage victory over Australia, the world champions, and claim bronze. The 42-year-old former soldier Robinson is ParalympicsGB’s vice-captain in Paris and has a remarkable backstory having only started playing the sport – which combines elements of rugby, handball and basketball and is played with a round rather than oval ball – as part of his rehabilitation after losing both legs when his patrol vehicle was hit by an improvised explosive device near Camp Bastion in 2013, on what was his fourth tour of Afghanistan.
Peacock aiming for 100m hat-trick “Can you handle it? Can you handle everyone looking at you? Can you handle a stadium full of people screaming and then doing the job that matters?” Paralympics GB’s Jonnie Peacock attempts to make it a hat-trick of T64 100m gold medals. After sharing the bronze medal in Tokyo in a photo finish, Peacock’s particularly bullish quotes leading into these Games suggest he knows he’ll have to run the race of his life in Saint-Denis in order to defeat the defending champion and world No 1, Italy’s Maxcel Amo Manu. “This is the big one and this is the pressure cooker. I’m not the hunted any more, I am the hunter,” Peacock continued. “Once you’ve got gold, you’re not looking for silvers.” He came through his heat successfully on Sunday but only in third, showing how much he has to do to claim a medal of any colour.

The British Paralympics Association has no concerns about the treatment of horses in the British camp ahead of the equestrian events in Paris in the wake of the whipping scandal that has plagued the Olympics.
The dressage events are due to get underway at the Palace of Versailles on Tuesday, with Britain's Natasha Baker, Mari Durward-Akhurst and Georgia Wilson among the competitors.
Olympic equestrian events sparked controversy when three-time gold medal winner Charlotte Dujardin was suspended after a video was released showing her repeatedly whipping her horse on the eve of the competition.
Penny Briscoe, head of the British Paralympics delegation, did not specifically ask whether horses had been whipped in British para-equestrian events, but believed the system was “very positive and well run”.
“It's been an incredibly difficult situation, not just for the sport but for the British team,” Briscoe said of the Dujardin case, which was recorded several years ago and made public in July.
“As a team leader I have no fears or concerns about my involvement in para-equestrian, this is my sixth summer cycle and I have always found the environment to be very supportive. “Have I ever asked a question about whether I've ever whipped a horse? No I haven't, but I know the athletes are coming in in good condition and I think our focus is on them and their performances, not what happens with TeamGB.”
“I think it's great that team GB bounced back from that. The sport needs to forget about it and reassess, but from my point of view I've always felt the environment in para-equestrian has been very positive and well run.”
Dave Ellis said after the win: “It's really unbelievable. Tokyo was the complete opposite but I'm so happy to have had a great race today. You only get a few chances in your career to qualify for the Paralympics so on the day you're even more nervous and you have to do it so to have been able to do it is really special.”
“(The organizers) brought the races forward so all the races will be held today, but we took great care to prepare for the heat and we finished the race. It's going to take a while to sink in. It reminded me of yesterday in Tokyo. It's a much happier feeling.”
Ellis and guide Pollard won gold in the men's PTVI triathlon, while Richter won gold in the women's PTS4.
GB Paralympian Dave Ellis and guide Luke Pollard took glory in the men's PTVI triathlon, while Megan Richter took gold in the women's PTS4 and Hannah Moore won bronze.
preamble
Welcome! Day 5 in Paris. After a golden 24 hours for British athletes, we face another action-packed schedule in the French capital.
Today's Paralympic daily briefing will provide a comprehensive overview of what's happening.
Coombs' leading role in badminton After the Olympics are over, the Porte de la Chapelle arena in northern Paris will become a cultural hub serving the local community, hosting concerts, shows and, less interestingly, “miscellaneous conferences.” Before Shakespeare and PowerPoint presentations echoed through the 8,000-seat venue, the arena would undergo rapid development. Pok Pok It's the day of the badminton final at the Shuttlecock World Championships. Dan Bethel is looking to go one step further from the silver medal he won in the SL3 Para-badminton singles in Tokyo. Bethel lost to India's Pramad Bhagat in a close-fought final in 2021. Bhagat, ranked number one in the world, will not be competing in Paris due to an 18-month suspension for three whereabouts violations in a 12-month period. Another Indian, Kumar Nitesh, is Bethel's final opponent at lunchtime. In the evening session, Kristen Coombes will be going for the SH6 gold medal against local hope Charles Noakes. Coombes won the bronze medal in Tokyo. Off the court, the 33-year-old works for IKEA and also works as an actor, appearing in one episode of Game of Thrones, The Witcher and various pantomimes.
Robinson to face Australia The British Paralympics wheelchair rugby team won a historic gold medal at the Tokyo 2021 Games, scoring 14 tries in a 54-49 victory over the United States. The sport, known in its early days as “murderball,” is still known for “loud contact, frequent flat tires and even flipped wheelchairs.” The Americans got their revenge in Sunday's semifinals, while Britain tried to repeat their group-stage victory over world champions Australia to win the bronze medal. Robinson, a 42-year-old former soldier who served as vice-captain of the British Paralympics team in Paris, has a remarkable resume. He only just started playing the sport, which combines elements of rugby, handball and basketball and is played with a round ball rather than an oval one, as part of his rehabilitation after losing both legs when his patrol vehicle was hit by an improvised explosive device near Camp Bastion in 2013 during his fourth deployment to Afghanistan.
Peacock aims for 100m hat trick“Can you handle it? Can you handle everyone watching you? Can you handle screaming stadiums and still do an important job?” British Paralympian Jonny Peacock is seeking a third consecutive T64 100m gold medal. After sharing the bronze medal in a photo finish in Tokyo, Peacock's particularly bullish comments heading into the event suggest he knows he'll have to run the race of his life in Saint-Denis to beat defending champion and world number one Maxel Amo Manu of Italy. “It's a big meet, a high-pressure race. I'm no longer the hunted, I'm the hunter,” Peacock continued. “If I win gold, I don't want silver.” He made it through Sunday's heats but finished third, showing just how hard he has to work to win a medal of any color.
