Paris Hilton Supports Bipartisan Bill Against Deepfake Pornography
Paris Hilton is voicing her support for a bipartisan initiative that aims to tackle the issue of AI-generated deepfake pornography.
On Thursday at Capitol Hill, she endorsed the Defiance Act, which is championed by Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and Laurel Lee (R-Fla.).
This legislation empowers victims of deepfake pornography to pursue legal action against offenders. It also holds those who create and distribute such content accountable, introducing fines and possible criminal consequences.
The goal is to address the increasing misuse of digitally altered sexual material.
During the press conference, Hilton shared her own experience from when she was 19 years old, recalling a private video of hers that was leaked online.
“When I was 19 years old, a private intimate video of me was shared with the world without my consent,” she expressed. “People called it a scandal. It wasn’t. It was abuse.”
She added, “There were no laws at the time to protect me. There weren’t even words for what had been done to me. The internet was still new, and so was the cruelty that came with it.”
Hilton emphasized, “Today, what happened to me then is happening now to millions of women and girls in a new and more terrifying way. Before, you had to trust someone and have something real stolen from you. Now, all it takes is a computer and a stranger’s creativity. Deepfake pornography has become an epidemic.”
This legislative effort continues the trend in Congress to mitigate AI abuse, following last year’s Take It Down Act, which was supported by First Lady Melania Trump and signed into law by President Donald Trump.
