Paris Mayoral Candidate from the Far Left to Stand Trial for Fraud Allegations

Trial Scheduled for Paris Mayoral Candidate Sofia Chikilou

Sofia Chikilou, a member of the far-left party La France Insoumise (LFI) and a candidate for the mayoralty of Paris, is set to face trial later this year. This is related to accusations of defrauding a media company back in 2018.

The 46-year-old Chikilou has represented Paris’s 6th district since 2022. Her trial is slated to take place in May at the 13th Criminal Court of the Paris Court of Justice, as reported by various sources.

She stands accused of fraudulently securing over 67,000 euros (around $78,000) in 2018, which negatively affected Le Media, a production company she co-founded. Additionally, she is alleged to have attempted to defraud the Crédit du Nord bank multiple times.

In court documents, it is claimed that Chikilou introduced herself as the company president even after stepping down from that role to acquire funds. There are also suspicions regarding her improper use of two checkbooks.

This trial adds another layer to her legal troubles; Chikilou was indicted last year for “aggravated fraud” tied to Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s 2017 presidential campaign, where she held the role of communications director. She maintains her innocence regarding these charges.

Chikilou, who has Algerian roots, suggested recently that a resolution had been reached among the parties in her ongoing case. She accused the Paris public prosecutor’s office of attempting to smear her reputation and interfere with her mayoral campaign against current mayor Anne Hidalgo, a member of the Socialist Party.

Throughout her tenure with LFI, Chikilou has been a polarizing figure. This includes speculation about a romantic relationship with Mélenchon, who is significantly older than her. She was prominently featured in a recent investigative book that scrutinizes the inner workings of LFI. The book, authored by journalist Charlotte Berrebi, suggested that her role has been central to the party’s dynamics and alleged that she has used her influence to eliminate rivals.

Chikilou has also faced criticism for the language she reportedly uses and accusations of anti-Semitism. In the same book, she is quoted as saying disparaging things about former party activists.

She has drawn parallels between her campaign in Paris and that of fellow far-left politician Zoran Mandani in New York City. If successful, she intends to implement his policies targeting wealth inequality, making public transport free, and supporting Palestinian rights, among other initiatives.

Despite these ambitions, Chikilou’s candidacy appears to be trailing in recent opinion polls, where she is currently at 12%—lower than candidates from the Green Party, the Socialist Party, and others.
