Paris Olympics triathlon turns into crash-filled disaster

The women’s triathlon cycling event at the Paris 2024 Olympics was thrown into chaos on France’s cobbled roads on Wednesday after several terrible accidents occurred.

Guam’s Manami Iijima was one of several competitors who suffered a terrible fall when their bikes skidded on the slippery road as they rounded a curve.

When the nasty fall was broadcast during a live event, commentators gasped in surprise.

“Oh no, not good on the cobblestones. In fact, it’s the same corner we saw. [Norwegian athlete] “Lotte Miller is out,” the Olympic announcer announced.

Miller crashed twice during the triathlon, ultimately requiring medical attention and failing to complete the race, leaving him crying on the street.

The weather was tough on the triathletes on Wednesday, with storms, heat and humidity making the competition especially difficult.

“I have no words for the last two hours we went through,” Australian triathlete Sophie Lin told reporters. Sydney Morning Herald“It was every type of bad weather you could imagine – strong currents, rain, heat, humidity and crowds – it had it all.”

Prior to the event, Authorities were concerned about water pollution. Rising waters in the Seine meant the race was postponed for a day.

$1.4 billion was spent to clean up the river in preparation for the event, but weather and currents caused pollution levels to exceed what could actually be improved.

Still, apart from some currents that were difficult for some swimmers to control, the race proceeded without any major issues in the water.
