Partial Parking Garage Collapse in Philadelphia

Search and rescue efforts are currently in progress following the collapse of a partial parking garage in Philadelphia on Thursday. At least one person has been confirmed dead, and two others are still unaccounted for, according to the city’s mayor.

Mayor Sherrell Parker reported that the incident occurred Wednesday afternoon while a parking structure was under construction near 30th Street and Grays Ferry Avenue in South Philadelphia. “Our first responders acted quickly, and we are still in the midst of search and rescue operations. Tragically, one life has been lost, and there are two individuals missing,” Parker announced in a post on X late Wednesday. “We remain determined, and we will not rest until we fulfill our responsibilities here.”

She also noted that the area surrounding the site, which includes a nearby shopping plaza and various stores, has been closed off, with no plans for reopening at this time.

Philadelphia Fire Chief Jeffrey Thompson stated that two individuals were rescued from the site and later treated at a local hospital. He mentioned that crews must stabilize the parking structure before continuing with the rescue efforts.

The garage was being built for the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and officials revealed that all seven floors of its stairway system were impacted by the collapse. Parker indicated that all necessary permits had been appropriately issued and that inspections were current; she attributed the collapse to a failure in a roof section being installed by a subcontractor.

The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia issued a statement acknowledging the serious nature of the construction incident. They emphasized that the safety of their construction workers is a priority and confirmed they are collaborating with city officials and construction partners to address the situation. Further updates will be shared as they become available.

As the search continues, the names of those who have died or are missing have not yet been released. Parker extended her thoughts to the families affected, expressing, “Our prayers are with those who have lost loved ones and those who are still waiting for news tonight. We ask everyone in Philadelphia to join us in prayer for them.”

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro added, “Today we are praying for those injured, the families of those who tragically lost their lives, and for those who anxiously wait as first responders continue their search.” He assured that his administration remains in contact with officials on the scene in Philadelphia.
