Brothers Injured in Florida Crash Linked to Street Racing
Over the weekend, two brothers who survived the 2018 Parkland High School shooting were involved in a tragic car accident in Florida, reportedly caused by a street racer.
Connor and Brandon Dietrich were among 15 people injured when a Toyota Camry crashed into a crowd outside Bradley’s Bar in Tampa around 12:40 a.m. Saturday, leaving four people dead.
While Brandon has managed to recover medically, Connor is still in critical condition and dealing with severe injuries, including a skull fracture and lacerated spleen, as noted in a GoFundMe organized by their uncle.
At the time of the incident, the brothers were with their close friend, Riley Hancock, who is also in critical condition. The crash occurred when 22-year-old Cyrus Sampson barreled into pedestrians during what is alleged to be street racing.
Brandon was trapped against a glass wall but managed to escape and rushed to assist Connor and Riley, according to their father, Bob Dietrich.
“He found Connor lying in a pool of blood. At first, he didn’t even recognize it was Riley, but then he noticed a severe forehead laceration,” Bob shared.
Brandon’s urgency to help others, it seems, was shaped by the harrowing experience they faced six years ago during the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.
Bob remarked, “He never spoke about it. He feared sharing it would lead to similar issues for us.”
However, he could see the struggle in Brandon’s eyes, but he was communicating, and that was crucial. It’s remarkable how he maintained composure amidst all the chaos of the crash.
Although Brandon’s injuries were less serious, Connor’s path to recovery is described as “long, uncertain, and incredibly difficult,” according to their uncle.
“Our entire family feels shaken by this tragedy,” he added.
The father expressed concerns, saying they won’t fully understand the extent of Connor’s brain injuries until MRI results come in. “We just don’t know. We might not get our son back,” he said.
Meanwhile, investigators reported that Sampson was taken into custody at the scene, facing multiple charges, including four counts of vehicular homicide.
He is also charged with several other serious offenses related to fleeing and reckless driving. A pretrial detention hearing is set for Thursday morning.
