Part falls off Boeing plane during takeoff in Denver

The engine cover of a Boeing plane fell off during takeoff at Denver International Airport Sunday morning, officials said.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Southwest Airlines flights “I came back safely.” The plane arrived at Denver Airport around 8:15 a.m. local time Sunday after the flight crew reported that a cover over the engine, known as a cowling, fell off during takeoff. The part struck the wing flap of the Boeing 737-800, which was towed back to the airport and to the gate.

The FAA announced it would investigate the incident.

Southwest Airlines said in a statement to The Hill that the plane was “experiencing a mechanical issue.” The airline also announced that a customer who was heading to Houston’s William P. Hobby Airport arrived at his destination on a different aircraft approximately three hours later than scheduled.

“We apologize for any inconvenience caused by the delay, but the safety of our customers and employees is our top priority. Our maintenance team is currently examining the aircraft,” the airline said.

According to FAA dataThe aircraft was delivered to the airline in 2015. The cowling is a removable engine cover that is typically removed for maintenance.
