Passenger Taped and Tied After Outburst on American Airlines Flight

On Thursday night, an airline passenger had to be restrained with duct tape and zip ties by fellow travelers and crew after launching into a racist and homophobic tirade mid-flight, which prompted a diversion of the plane, a report indicated.

This incident occurred on American Airlines flight 618, traveling from Dallas to Newark. Around 10:15 p.m., the disruptive passenger unleashed a barrage of hateful remarks at his seatmate, leading a black flight attendant and other passengers to intervene and restrain him.

When the flight attendant stepped in, the man reacted by shouting racial slurs while also making anti-gay comments, as reported.

Video footage captured the individual bound to his seat, his hands, head, and torso secured. He became aggressive, hitting his seatmate and damaging his laptop.

A woman nearby tried to assist the passenger being targeted but was pushed away by the unruly man. That’s when three male passengers intervened, managing to subdue him with duct tape and zip ties.

According to American Airlines, the flight had to be rerouted to Baltimore “due to a disruptive customer.” Upon landing, law enforcement was there to handle the situation and helped the passenger disembark before the flight continued to its final destination.

The Federal Aviation Administration has confirmed that the incident is under investigation, noting that there have been over 1,160 disruptive passenger events reported in 2026. An FBI spokesperson mentioned that the man was apprehended by Maryland Transportation Police and is facing state charges.

The federal authorities are collaborating with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland to decide on potential federal charges. Currently, the FBI is interviewing witnesses to collect details and will consult with the U.S. Attorney’s Office regarding further legal actions.
